Matthew McConaughey became a household name pretty quickly after his breakout role in A Time to Kill. That movie earned him an award for the best breakthrough performance at the MTV Movie Awards and made him a star that everyone recognized.

By the late nineties, he was already showing off his range by working with big names like Bill Murray in Larger Than Life and Steven Spielberg in the drama Amistad. Most people probably remember him best from the early 2000s when he was the king of romantic comedies.

He had great chemistry with leading ladies like Jennifer Lopez in The Wedding Planner and Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Even though these movies were huge hits, he eventually decided he wanted to do something different and stepped away from the rom-com world to avoid being stuck in the same kind of roles forever.

This led to a major comeback where he started taking on much more serious and intense projects. He won an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club and followed that up with the space movie Interstellar.

But when he talked to the press about his long career, he said his favorite movie was actually a smaller project from 2012 called Mud. It was a southern drama directed by Jeff Nichols that even went to the Cannes Film Festival.

McConaughey told reporters that Mud was probably, in a lot of ways, my favourite film I’ve ever done. He felt like the setting of the American South was like its own character in the story. He really liked how the director made the movie feel classic and poetic. He explained that the South is definitely a character in the film; it definitely feels like a classic American film.

The actor also shared that the director wanted the story to be about more than just a specific place. He said that [Nichols] wants this to translate to humanity and not just be a small Southern picture.

For McConaughey, spending four months playing that character was a great experience because of how the role handled love and life. He noted that his character doesn’t compete; there’s no ego about his love.

Lately, the actor has been staying very busy with new movies and his work as a teacher and author. He is starring in a new crime thriller called The Rivals of Amziah King, which comes out this August.

In that film, he plays a beekeeper in Oklahoma whose life gets complicated when a foster daughter returns. The movie has a big cast, including Kurt Russell and Cole Sprouse. He also has a movie coming out called The Lost Bus, which is a survival story about a real wildfire.

On top of that, he is finally going back to romance in a Netflix movie called Positano, where he stars with Zoe Saldaña. Besides acting, he has been spending time talking to other actors about how to protect their voices and faces from being used by AI technology.
