Eiza González Reveals How Growing up Obsessed With Weight Affected Her Life
Eiza González opened up about her constant struggle with body image in a heartfelt Instagram post. On Wednesday, February 25, the 36-year-old actress spoke out to mark Eating Disorder Awareness Week, sharing her personal journey and the challenges she faced growing up.
González revealed that her difficult relationship with her body started as a child after the tragic death of her father in a motorcycle accident. She explained that she turned to food to cope with the grief and depression she felt at just twelve years old.
“By 13, I had gained 30 pounds almost overnight, navigating grief, puberty, and confusion all at once,” González wrote, describing the struggle of trying to manage emotions she didn’t fully understand. Her situation became more challenging a few years later when she was cast as the lead in the Nickelodeon Latin America series Sueña conmigo.
Becoming a teenage star put her under constant public scrutiny. “Every image was dissected, every detail criticized, and everyone seemed to have an opinion about my body, who I was, and who I should be,” she shared. This constant judgment made her obsess over her appearance and feel like she had to change herself to be liked, which only left her feeling emptier.
Now an adult, González says she has worked hard to break these habits and focus on her own well-being. “Today, as a grown woman, I choose myself,” she wrote. She added that while the journey is not always easy, she is proud of the progress she has made and is committed to treating her body with kindness and respect instead of trying to fit into someone else’s standards.
González has also had a busy year professionally. She starred in the sci-fi horror film Ash, directed by Flying Lotus and released in March 2025, playing astronaut Riya Ortiz alongside Aaron Paul and Iko Uwais. She also appeared in Guy Ritchie’s adventure film Fountain of Youth, which debuted on Apple TV+ in May 2025.
In that film, she traveled the globe alongside John Krasinski and Natalie Portman in search of a mythical source of immortality. The movie has remained popular on streaming charts worldwide.
Looking ahead, González will reunite with Guy Ritchie for the action thriller In the Grey, set to release on April 10. The film stars Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Rosamund Pike and follows a team trying to recover billions of dollars in stolen cash.
Through her acting career and advocacy for mental health, González continues to be a strong voice in Hollywood. She ended her Instagram post with a message for anyone struggling, reminding them that “it is never too late to start honoring yourself.”
