Shia Labeouf Opens up About Mardi Gras Arrest and Says Gay People Are Scary to Him

Shia LaBeouf has once again sparked controversy after sharing his explanation for a recent arrest in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. The 39-year-old actor sat down with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan to talk about the events that led to his detention, offering a candid and highly controversial perspective.

LaBeouf admitted that he felt intimidated when approached by a group of people he identified as gay. “When I’m standing by myself and three gays are next to me touching my leg, I get scared. If that’s homophobic, then I’m that,” he said.

He also added, “Big gay people are scary to me,” statements that immediately drew criticism online for their prejudiced tone. According to New Orleans authorities, LaBeouf was arrested after allegedly striking two people outside a business on Royal Street.

Police reports indicate he punched one person in the nose before bystanders intervened and restrained him until officers arrived. In the interview, he implied that the altercation was a reaction to his personal discomfort, stating, “I’m fine with people being gay as long as they were over there and not in my lap.”

LaBeouf attempted to downplay the seriousness of his remarks by pointing to his state of mind during the incident. “I was drunk during the celebrations, and everything I’m saying is nonsense,” he told Callaghan. He is currently facing two counts of simple battery related to the episode, adding to a long history of legal issues and public controversies.

This is not the first time LaBeouf has made headlines for his behavior. In 2017, he was arrested for public intoxication and allegedly made racially charged comments to officers, later apologizing and citing struggles with substance abuse.
