Wunmi Mosaku Commands the Spotlight for Essence Photoshoot
Wunmi Mosaku is having a huge year, but her latest feature with Essence shows a softer side of the award-winning actress. Mosaku steps into a space focused on calm, reflection, and self-connection. The story and images present her not as a character in crisis, but as a woman grounded in her roots and comfortable in her power.
The shoot focused on natural colors and strong shapes that matched her quiet strength. The spread highlighted her journey from growing up in Manchester to becoming one of the most respected actors working today. It was less about glamour and more about presence.
This moment comes at a time when her career is reaching new heights. Mosaku, 39, recently won a BAFTA for her role as Annie in Sinners. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler, became a global hit and earned major awards attention.

In the supernatural horror musical, she stars alongside Michael B. Jordan and Jayme Lawson in a story set in the Jim Crow-era South. The movie has made over $350 million worldwide and received 16 Oscar nominations.
In the feature, Mosaku spoke about feeling supported in her recent projects. I felt safe and respected, she said, describing the atmosphere on set. That sense of trust, she explained, helped her go deeper into her characters.
She also talked about working with costume designer Ruth E. Carter. The way Ms. Ruth works is such a layered process that I liken to the Michelangelo quote, she shared. She then continued with the famous words: The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work; it is already there; I just have to chisel away the superfluous material. Mosaku said this idea of chiseling away has shaped how she approaches her role as Annie.
After Sinners, she is moving into very different territory. She has joined the cast of The Social Reckoning, the upcoming film written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. The project is a follow-up to The Social Network and focuses on Facebook’s internal crisis after the 2021 whistleblower scandal. Mosaku will star alongside Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Jeremy Strong. The film is set to be released on October 9, exactly sixteen years after the first movie.
No matter what happens next, it is clear she is shaping her own story. Which of her roles has stayed with you the most? Are you looking forward to seeing her in Aaron Sorkin’s next film? Share your thoughts in the comments.
