The world of Gilead is getting darker and more intense in Hulu’s upcoming sequel series, The Testaments. The first trailer, released this week, gives viewers a look at how life is shaping up for the young women growing up under the oppressive regime.

The series continues the story from The Handmaid’s Tale, which ran for six seasons and wrapped up in May 2025. Fans will now follow Agnes, the daughter of June Osborne, who has been renamed after being taken from her mother. Agnes is now a teenager in Gilead, and the trailer shows her coming of age as a “Plum,” a girl in training to become a Gilead wife. Chase Infiniti plays Agnes in the new series.

“It’s easier to accept a story than believe that the people around you are monsters,” Agnes says in the trailer, which features The Cranberries’ ’90s hit “Dreams.” The two-minute teaser hints at the brutal realities of Gilead, including punishments and strict rules enforced by the Wives. But it also highlights the themes of resistance and hope as Agnes rallies the other Plums, saying, “We had no idea what we were capable of. It was time for us to change things.”

The Testaments is adapted from Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel of the same name. Bruce Miller, showrunner and executive producer of The Handmaid’s Tale, returns to lead the project. Other executive producers include Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, and Ann Dowd. Dowd reprises her Emmy-winning role as Aunt Lydia, serving as a guiding presence for the next generation in Gilead.

The cast also includes Lucy Halliday, Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya, and Kira Guloien. Moss is not appearing on-screen but remains an executive producer, keeping her character June influential behind the scenes.

“You get adolescent wives. It’s the dynamic between girls of a certain age who are as worry-free as you can be in Gilead — with this huge sword, a marriage of Damocles, hanging over their heads,” Miller told The Hollywood Reporter.

The Testaments takes place four years after the end of The Handmaid’s Tale and shifts the perspective to Gilead’s young women. It follows Agnes and Daisy, a new girl arriving from outside Gilead, as they navigate life at Aunt Lydia’s elite school for future wives. The series promises a mix of strict discipline, unexpected rebellion, and the growing bond between the two teens that could change everything.

The show premieres on April 8 with three episodes on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers. New episodes will be released weekly.
