Looking back at her 2019 appearance in a bright yellow Chloe gown, Paltrow described her feelings toward the high-profile event as complicated. She explained that people tend to fall into two categories when attending the gala: those who embrace elaborate, theatrical costumes and those who stick to classic evening wear.

For her, the decision is simple. I have sort of a love-hate relationship with the Met Ball that’s well documented, she said. Also, like, I’m me—so I’m never going to the Met Ball in like, a hot dog costume or whatever, you know? I always have to be myself, first and foremost. Like, I’m not going in a costume; I’m going in a dress.

She emphasized that she values timeless elegance over the extravagant themes that often dominate the event. There’s two camps who go to the Met Ball—the costume or the evening dress. And I’m always going to be an evening dress person, she added.
