Clint Eastwood Opens up About the One Movie He Regrets Directing
Clint Eastwood is known for keeping quiet about the quality of his own movies. He usually lets audiences decide if a film is good or bad, rarely giving his own opinion. Over his long career, not every project has been a hit.
Critics have pointed to films like Hereafter or Jersey Boys as weaker efforts, and even fans admit that movies like The 15:17 to Paris or Firefox don’t have the same spark as his biggest hits.
There is, however, one movie Eastwood admitted might not have been his best. That film was Sudden Impact, the fourth installment of the Dirty Harry series. By that time, Eastwood had played Harry Callahan three times under other directors. He decided to direct the fourth movie himself, but his approach was casual rather than ambitious.
“I hadn’t directed a Dirty Harry film in the past, and it was, for me, a kind of whimsical thing,” he said. “I thought I’d do one before I hung that series up.” Sudden Impact is often considered the weakest in the franchise, even though it includes some of the most famous moments in action movie history. Eastwood knew from the start it would be hard to match the original 1971 film.
“I thought the first Dirty Harry was a terrific film, and it was always going to be hard to follow that,” he admitted. “But it was almost like saying, ‘I’m the only one who hasn’t directed a Dirty Harry movie, so I might as well do one.’”
Even though the movie didn’t impress critics, it gave the world one of the most famous lines in film history: “Go ahead, make my day.” Eastwood recognized the importance of that moment, saying, “It did have the most famous line of all the Dirty Harry films, if that counts for anything.”
He also compared his attitude to that of other legendary directors. “I’m sure that Billy Wilder doesn’t sit there and wonder which film of his was best: Double Indemnity, or Sunset Boulevard, or Some Like It Hot,” he said.
Eastwood didn’t stress over whether the movie was perfect, treating it more as a task he wanted to complete. “I’ve directed one Dirty Harry, and I think that’s fine,” he added. Even in his mid-nineties, Eastwood has stayed active in Hollywood. His most recent film, Juror No. 2, came out in 2024 and received strong reviews.
The legal thriller stars Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette and follows a juror who realizes he may have played a role in the victim’s death. While rumors suggested this could be his final film, Eastwood has not officially retired.
Outside of filmmaking, Eastwood lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where he once served as mayor. He remains closely connected to Warner Bros., maintaining an office there for decades. His influence on both Westerns and urban thrillers has made him one of the most important figures in modern American cinema.
