Netflix has revealed new details about its upcoming live-action “Assassin’s Creed” series, confirming that the show will be set in ancient Rome during 64 A.D. The series is an original story for the streamer and is directed by Johan Renck, best known for his work on “Chernobyl.” Filming is already underway at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, with additional locations planned in Lazio and Tuscany.

The series has expanded its cast with several new recurring members. Louis McCartney, who starred in the “Stranger Things” stage adaptation “The First Shadow,” joins alongside Mirren Mack (“The Nest,” “The Witcher: Blood Origin”), Youssef Kerkour (“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”) and Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (“Foundation”). They join previously announced cast members including Lola Petticrew, Toby Wallace, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Nabhann Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, and Corrado Invernizzi.

Netflix’s “Assassin’s Creed” series marks the first time the franchise will explore ancient Rome. The year 64 A.D. is infamous for the Great Fire of Rome, which destroyed large parts of the city near the Circus Maximus. Emperor Nero was away at Antium when the fire broke out, inspiring the famous phrase, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” Some historians believe Nero accidentally caused the fire, though others claim he used it as an opportunity to reshape the city.

The show is filming primarily at Cinecittà Studios, utilizing the studio’s massive ancient Rome backlot, which includes a replica of the Roman Forum. Production began on March 9 and is expected to run until October 16, with a potential release in 2027. The Italian production will also take advantage of tax incentives that cover up to 40% of eligible costs.

“I am honored that Netflix has chosen our studios and our sets to create such a spectacular, ambitious series that is eagerly anticipated around the world,” said Cinecittà Studios CEO Manuela Cacciamani. “It is a sign of the credibility and reputation that Cinecittà enjoys internationally, and of the professional guarantee we offer to every kind of production, of any genre and scale. But I am even more honored by the trust placed in our skilled workforce and in our art department, which is collaborating on the creation of truly spectacular sets.”

The series will explore the secret war between two rival factions: one trying to control humanity’s future and the other fighting to preserve free will. Characters will navigate pivotal historical events while seeking powerful artifacts called Pieces of Eden, echoing the plot of the bestselling video game series that has sold more than 230 million copies since 2007.

Roberto Patino, known for “Westworld,” and David Wiener, creator of “Homecoming,” are leading the project as showrunners and executive producers. Ubisoft Film & Television executives Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones, along with Matt O’Toole, are also serving as executive producers. Carlo Poggioli, Italy’s acclaimed costume designer behind “The Leopard” and “The New Pope,” is designing the show’s wardrobe, while Italian line producer Nicola Rosada, who has previously worked on “Emily in Paris” and “The Decameron,” is managing the Italian production.

The series promises to deliver an ambitious, historically rich story that blends action, intrigue, and the iconic Assassin-Templar conflict.
