Paapa Essiedu Faced Race-Fuelled Death Threats After Being Cast as Snape in Harry Potter Reboot
Paapa Essiedu has opened up about serious online abuse following his casting as Professor Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter series. He spoke about the situation in an interview with The Sunday Times, where he described receiving threats through social media.
He said some messages were direct and violent. “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” he shared. He also explained that similar threats appear on his Instagram. “I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you,’” he added. Even with confidence that he may not be harmed, he said the experience still has an emotional effect.
Essiedu said the abuse should not be normal for anyone doing their job. He pointed out that acting is his profession and not something that should lead to threats or fear. “Nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job,” he said. He also added that it still impacts him mentally, even if he tries to stay strong.
His role in the new series places him as Snape, a major character in the story. The role was originally played by Alan Rickman in the earlier film franchise. Since his casting was announced, it has led to strong reactions from some online fans.
Despite the backlash, Essiedu said he is using the situation as motivation. He explained that the negativity makes him more focused on the role. “The abuse fuels me,” he said. He also spoke about representation and how it connects to his own childhood. “I would imagine myself at Hogwarts… the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world?” he said, explaining that it pushes him to stay confident.
He also shared parts of his background as a fan of the book series by J. K. Rowling. He said he grew up reading the books but never watched the original films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. He described the books as an escape during difficult parts of his childhood.
The new adaptation is planned for release in 2027 on HBO Max. It will feature a new main trio, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron.
Essiedu has also signed a long-term commitment to the series, expected to last around a decade. He said it is a major life decision and will bring big changes in the future. He also mentioned he could be entering a new stage of life by the time it ends.
Disagreement with casting choices is normal, but harassment and threats are not. Actors should be able to work without fear. It is fine to discuss opinions, but it should stay respectful. What do you think about the reaction to this casting? Share your thoughts in the comments.
