Anne Hathaway (43) Speaks Out on Model Casting in ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’
Anne Hathaway is stepping back into the world of fashion with a strong voice and a clear goal as she works on the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. The 43-year-old actress is not just returning to her role. She is also helping shape what happens behind the scenes.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, her co-star Meryl Streep shared how Hathaway spoke up during filming. The cast had traveled to Milan Fashion Week last year to shoot scenes, and that is where the moment happened. Streep, who plays Miranda Priestly, said she was surprised by what she saw on the runway.
“I was struck by how not only beautiful and young—everyone seems young to me—but alarmingly thin the models were,” she said, explaining that she thought the industry had already moved past that issue.
Hathaway noticed the same thing and decided to act. According to Streep, she went directly to the producers to make sure the film would not reflect those unhealthy standards. She wanted the models in their fictional fashion shows to look more realistic and not overly thin.
“She made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal,” Streep explained. She also praised Hathaway, calling her a “stand-up girl” for using her position to push for a better approach.
The conversation also touched on Hathaway’s own feelings about aging and appearance. She spoke openly about how her mindset has changed over time. “Some days you look in the mirror, and you’re just like, ‘Not bad.’ And some days you look in the mirror, and you’re like, ‘What?’” she said with a laugh. She added that she has learned to let go of pressure and accept herself as she is.
Fans will soon see her back on screen in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is set to release on May 1. The film brings back familiar faces like Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, while also adding new cast members, including Kenneth Branagh and Simone Ashley.
The story will follow Miranda Priestly as she deals with the changing media world, including the decline of print magazines, and faces off with Emily Charlton, who now holds a powerful position at a competing company.
This sequel is just one part of a very busy year for Hathaway. She has several other films on the way, including the A24 project Mother Mary, where she stars alongside Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer.
She will also appear in the science fiction movie Flowervale Street with Ewan McGregor, and later in the year, she is set to lead the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel Verity. Alongside acting, Hathaway is also working behind the scenes. She is involved in developing The Princess Diaries 3, a project she is producing.
