Zoe Saldaña (47) Opens up About What She Refuses To Do for a Movie Role
Zoe Saldaña has shown that she will go through almost anything for a movie role—but there’s one line she won’t cross: messing with her body. In a recent interview with Digital Spy, the 45-year-old actress said she refuses to starve herself or overeat for a part, no matter how demanding the role.
Saldaña has spent years transforming for blockbuster films, from sitting through hours of makeup to become the green-skinned Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, to navigating the glowing jungles of Pandora in Avatar. But she makes it clear that her love of food and her health come first.
“I don’t like to f**k with my body like that,” she told Digital Spy. “I know I don’t have the internal drive to starve myself or overeat.” She even joked, “I love Shake Shack too much, as well!”
Her stance is very different from that of actors known for extreme transformations, like Christian Bale in The Machinist or Jared Leto in multiple roles. While Saldaña admires their dedication, she doesn’t think her own body could handle such dramatic changes.
“I really admire actors like Bale and Jared Leto who go up and down, but they’re gifted… I don’t think that would happen to me,” she explained. Even without extreme dieting, Saldaña has cemented her status as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
She recently became the highest-grossing actor of all time, surpassing Scarlett Johansson, thanks in large part to the success of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has already earned more than $1.4 billion since its December 2025 release.
Saldaña is also keeping busy with new projects. She wrapped the third season of Taylor Sheridan’s spy series Special Ops: Lioness, set to stream on Paramount+ later this year. On the big screen, she will star alongside Matthew McConaughey in the Netflix romantic adventure Positano, filming in Italy this May. This marks a shift from her usual blockbuster sci-fi roles.
Fans and critics have also praised her versatility in the musical drama Emilia Pérez, which co-stars Selena Gomez and enjoyed a strong run during the 2025 awards season. And of course, she will return for Avatar 4, slated for 2029.
Through all this, Saldaña’s focus remains clear. She chooses roles that challenge her creatively without compromising her well-being—or her favorite meals. In a Hollywood culture often obsessed with body changes and extreme transformations, she’s carving out her own path.
