Marvel is carefully planning the next chapter for the Black Panther. The studio wants to honor the late Chadwick Boseman while figuring out who will take up the mantle next. Right now, Letitia Wright’s Shuri is the hero carrying the title, but insiders say Marvel is delaying the introduction of a permanent new Black Panther.

Fans initially thought the next Black Panther might appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but according to entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman, Marvel is taking a slower approach. “I can now say for sure that they decided not to introduce this new Black Panther in Doomsday, but in Secret Wars,” Richtman said.

This means the big reveal will happen in the final installment of the Multiverse Saga, scheduled for December 17, 2027, while Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in theaters the following day. This decision gives Shuri time to have a full story arc in Doomsday before the Black Panther role passes on to someone else.

Early reports suggest she will lead Wakandan forces against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. By keeping the new Black Panther out of this film, Marvel can make sure Shuri’s time as the hero is meaningful and not rushed.

The end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduced T’Challa’s son, Toussaint, which sets up a future successor without having to recast Chadwick Boseman’s character. One theory is that Marvel could use the multiverse to bring in an older version of Toussaint or a variant from a different reality.

Actor Damson Idris has been linked to these rumors. He has said he would be open to joining the Marvel universe if the right opportunity comes along. Aaron Pierre, known for Lanterns and Rebel Ridge, has also been mentioned as a potential choice for the new Black Panther.

Marvel has reportedly met with several actors to see who might fit the role best. The studio wants to make sure the transition feels smooth and doesn’t take away from Shuri’s story. While Marvel prepares for this big shift, the actors involved are staying busy with other projects.

Letitia Wright was recently featured in Prada’s Re-Nylon campaign alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and is preparing for the global press tour for Avengers: Doomsday. Damson Idris is also working outside the Marvel world.

He has been confirmed to star in Netflix’s political thriller series The Lords’ Day, produced by the team behind House of Cards. The six-part show follows Idris as a British spy trapped in a hostage situation at the Palace of Westminster.

Idris has also been praised for his role in the 2025 racing drama F1, which earned him several award nominations. Both Wright and Idris are proving themselves in a variety of roles, which could make them strong choices if they eventually step into the Black Panther legacy.
