Gina Gershon (63) Reveals Why She Refused a Major Horror Role in ‘Friday The 13th’
Gina Gershon may be well known today for bold roles, but early in her career she made a decision that could have changed everything.
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Gershon spoke about turning down a major opportunity when she was just starting out. She had been offered a leading role in Friday the 13th Part 2, a film that later became part of a huge horror franchise.
At the time, she was eager to break into movies. Still, one part of the script made her stop and rethink the offer. In her book AlphaPussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs, she explained that the role included a death scene where her character would be topless. She felt it added nothing to the story. She wrote, “At the time, those kinds of slasher movies always had girls dying with their breasts exposed… That seemed pretty lame to me: exploitation 101.”
Gershon made it clear that her issue was not with nudity itself. She said she was open to it if it had a purpose. What bothered her was how it was being used. Speaking about the moment, she said, “I was offered a lead in that movie… but it definitely felt kind of exploitative to me and a little silly that right before she gets killed, her top has to come off.”
Before making her final choice, she turned to her father for advice. Instead of pushing her one way or the other, he reminded her that it was her decision. That support helped her trust her instincts.
After thinking it through, she walked away from the role. She later said, “I don’t really want to do this. I wasn’t comfortable with it. It seemed silly to me.” Soon after, she started her film career in a different project instead.
Years later, Gershon did take on roles that included nudity, including her well-known performance in Showgirls. Looking back, she said she now understands the purpose behind some of those scenes. She explained, “It is really a comment on like ugly America, and on capitalism and power struggles and dynamics and all those things.”
Her story shows that even early in her career, she was willing to say no if something did not feel right.
This is a strong example of trusting yourself, even when the pressure is high. Many people would take any role just to get started, but she chose to stick to her values. That kind of decision can shape a career in a better way long term.
