Tom Felton Connects With New Draco Malfoy Actor To Offer Support
Tom Felton is reaching out to the new generation of wizards taking over the Harry Potter world. The actor, who famously played Draco Malfoy in the original film series, shared that he contacted Lox Pratt, the young actor stepping into the role for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.
Felton, who portrayed Draco from 2001 to 2011, is currently performing as an adult version of the character in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, he explained why he felt it was important to connect with Pratt and his family.
“I’ve sent word, yes. I think it’s really important. It’s very different — we were entering things that don’t exist; there’s quite a lot of weight now,” Felton said. He emphasized that his intention is not to tell Pratt how to play the character but to provide support and encouragement.
“Here’s my phone number. Here’s my address. To his parents as well as him, and to anyone else there,” Felton added, showing his hands-off but supportive approach.
He also gave some lighthearted advice about enjoying the experience of working on such a huge production. “Have as much fun as possible, take as many pictures as you can, steal as many props as you can — they’ll be worth a fortune. But also, if you do need a word of encouragement or questions to ask, I’m there.”
Felton reflected on how much filmmaking has changed since he first appeared in the movies. Back then, they shot on physical film, and the young actors learned on set with crew members smoking nearby while performing broomstick stunts.
He compared that to today’s environment, which is full of social media attention and modern technology. The actor also noted the exciting coincidence of performing in New York so close to his former co-star.
“Of course, Daniel Radcliffe’s play is only 400 meters from mine. I’m playing Draco, he’s opening what I think is one of the best shows on Broadway other than ours,” Felton said. His run as Draco at the Lyric Theatre has been extended through May 10, while Radcliffe’s solo show Every Brilliant Thing is running nearby through May 24.
The HBO Harry Potter series, starring Pratt alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry and Alastair Stout as Ron, is currently in production and aiming for a Christmas Day release. Felton’s outreach shows a full-circle moment for the franchise, linking the original films to the new series while offering guidance to the next generation.
