A new look at the world of The Hunger Games has arrived. Lionsgate has shared the first trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, giving fans a preview of a much earlier chapter in the story.

This film goes back years before the rise of Katniss Everdeen. The focus is on Haymitch Abernathy when he was young and still fighting for survival. The story begins on the day he is chosen for the 50th Hunger Games, a special event known as the Second Quarter Quell.

In this version of the Games, the rules are even harsher. Each district must send twice as many tributes as usual. That means 48 young competitors are forced into the arena instead of 24, making the situation even more dangerous.

The movie is based on the book by Suzanne Collins, released in 2025. It explores how Haymitch became a winner and later a mentor.

Joseph Zada plays the lead role. The cast also includes Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Mckenna Grace, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. in key roles.

Behind the camera, Francis Lawrence returns as director. The script is written by Billy Ray, while production is handled by Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Lawrence.

The film is set to open in theaters on November 20. Details about the trailer and release were shared by Lionsgate as the studio begins promoting the next part of the franchise.

Going back to Haymitch’s past is a smart move. He is one of the most interesting characters, and fans have wanted to know his story for a long time. It could bring something fresh while still staying connected to the original films. What do you think about this prequel? Are you excited to see Haymitch’s story, or do you think the series should move in a different direction? Share your thoughts in the comments.
