First Look at the ‘I Play Rocky’ Popcorn Bucket: A Wearable Boxing Glove Built to Knock Out the Concession Stand

Theater popcorn buckets have quietly become their own form of pop culture. Studios now design them like miniature props, and fans line up to buy them before a movie even opens. Some of the most outlandish designs end up selling out in hours, then reappearing online at much higher prices.

This season’s boxing-themed entry is arriving at a fitting moment. ‘Rocky‘ turns 50 this year, and the original won Best Picture after opening in late 1976. Theaters and studios are marking the anniversary with a wave of merchandise, and one piece in particular is already getting attention.

The first look at the ‘I Play Rocky’ popcorn bucket shows a sculpted red boxing glove with 2 white bands at the cuff and the film’s logo printed on the wrist. The top flips open on a hinge, and the popcorn goes inside the fist. You can wear it on your hand like a real glove, which makes it a prop as much as a snack container.

The design is simple but clever. A hinged lid lets you load popcorn into the knuckle area, and the cuff gives your hand a place to slide in. One seller lists the plastic container at about 6 inches wide and 13 inches long.

The bucket pairs with a matching collectible. A tumbler is sculpted like a red boxing robe, complete with gold lapels, a gold belt tied at the waist and a gold lid with a straw. Together they let fans build a mini ring-side setup before the film even starts.

Swan Drive-In is selling the glove bucket for $39.95, and both ‘I Play Rocky’ pieces are listed as shipping on or before November 6. Fandango has also launched a $49.99 ‘Knockout Bundle’ that includes a Rocky Staircase popcorn bucket and a movie ticket to either ‘I Play Rocky’ or the anniversary re-release of the original.

The Staircase bucket looks like the famous Philadelphia Art Museum steps, with a little Rocky standing at the top. It sells separately for $39.95, while a round commemorative tin goes for $17.95. If you want a ticket as well, the bundle costs $10 more.

New ‘I Play Rocky’ Trailer Shows Anthony Ippolito Fighting for the Role of a Lifetime as Sylvester Stallone

Collectors aren’t waiting for the film to open. Early listings on resale sites show the glove bucket at anywhere from $45 to $74.95, well above its retail price. That’s a familiar pattern for limited theater merchandise, and it suggests demand could outstrip supply.

Fans who want to avoid markups will need to pre-order from official sources. Given how quickly popcorn buckets have sold out in recent years, it may pay to move early.

‘I Play Rocky’ is Amazon MGM Studios’ drama about the making of the original film, directed by Oscar winner Peter Farrelly from a script by Peter Gamble. Anthony Ippolito stars as a young Sylvester Stallone, who fights to write and star in ‘Rocky’ despite his lack of fame. Its logline describes an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write ‘Rocky,’ he was meant to be Rocky Balboa.

The supporting cast includes Stephan James as Carl Weathers, Matt Dillon as Frank Stallone Sr., AnnaSophia Robb, P.J. Byrne as Irwin Winkler, Toby Kebbell as Robert Chartoff and Jay Duplass as director John G. Avildsen. It was also a runner-up for the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The timing is packed. ‘I Play Rocky’ opens in select theaters on November 6 and expands everywhere on November 20, just before Thanksgiving. The original ‘Rocky’ returns to theaters for its 50th anniversary on November 7 to 11, and the real film debuted on November 21, 1976.

Amazon MGM is positioning the biopic for an awards push, and the merchandise rollout suggests the studio wants fans to treat it as an event. A glove-shaped bucket may seem like a gimmick, but it also gives audiences a reason to see the movie in theaters.

Popcorn buckets are now a legitimate marketing tool, with some designs generating more social media buzz than trailers. They give theaters a way to sell an experience, and they give fans a souvenir they can keep. The ‘I Play Rocky’ glove fits that formula neatly because it connects directly to the movie’s central image.

Whether or not you plan to see the film, it’s hard not to admire the craftsmanship. A boxing glove you can wear while eating popcorn is exactly the kind of silly, nostalgic detail ‘Rocky’ fans love.
