Scarlett Johansson, 41, Reflects on a Difficult Era for Women in Entertainment
Scarlett Johansson is opening up about how difficult Hollywood could be for women in the early 2000s. In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning on April 12, the actress spoke about the pressure female performers faced during that time, especially when it came to looks and the kinds of roles they were offered.
Johansson said women were often judged in ways that were considered normal back then. She explained that public conversations regularly focused on women’s bodies, style, and appearance. For young actresses trying to build careers, it created a tough and stressful atmosphere.
Looking back on her own experience, Johansson said, Growing up in the entertainment industry and then being a 20-year-old woman in the early 2000s, in the spotlight, I think in general, it was a really harsh time.
She also shared that the acting opportunities available to her were often limited. Instead of being offered a wide mix of characters, she said many roles fit the same narrow ideas. Johansson explained that there was not always much room to show range or take on deeper parts.
During the interview, she said she was frequently cast as a “bombshell” or in supporting roles during her younger years. While those jobs helped her career, they did not fully match what she wanted creatively.
To push herself further, Johansson turned to theater in New York. She said stage work became an important way to grow as a performer and try something different from film work in Hollywood.
She recalled, It was kind of tricky to navigate around that because there was a lot more that I wanted to do, and I found that doing theater in New York was a great way to work different muscles.
The interview also highlighted how busy Johansson remains today. Alongside acting, she has built her skincare brand The Outset, which launched in 2022. The company focuses on simple products made for sensitive skin.
Johansson is also preparing for several film projects. Reports say she is involved in a new version of The Exorcist directed by Mike Flanagan. She is expected to appear with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sasha Calle. The movie is being described as a new standalone story and is aiming for release in March 2027.
She is also connected to a Tower of Terror movie project. In addition, Johansson recently stepped behind the camera and made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great.
Even with a packed schedule, Johansson continues to speak about the need for better opportunities for women in entertainment. Her comments show that while the industry has changed in many ways, there is still more progress to make.
Now in a new stage of her career, she continues to grow as an actress, producer, businesswoman, and director while reflecting honestly on the challenges women once faced.
