Cate Blanchett had a tense moment on the red carpet at the 2026 Olivier Awards in London, where she was seen reacting sharply to someone off-camera.

The Oscar-winning actress, 56, attended the event on April 12 as a nominee for best actress for her role in The Seagull at the London Barbican Theatre. During her walk on the red carpet, video footage showed her raising her hand toward someone out of frame and clearly saying, “Stop it.” Right after that, she made a middle finger gesture in the same direction.

It is not clear who she was speaking to. The person was not shown in the video, and it is not confirmed if it was a reporter or someone else from the media area.

Blanchett still continued with the event, where she was there as part of a major theatre celebration in London. Her performance in The Seagull has also been getting attention in theatre circles, and there are reports that the production may move to New York later in the year, according to Deadline.

On the same night, Blanchett wore a black Lanvin dress with cut-out details. The look included exposed shoulder areas and a design that revealed part of her midsection.

The red carpet moment also comes during a period where Blanchett has been open about her complicated feelings toward fame and public attention. In past interviews, she has spoken about how she struggles with constant media coverage and being photographed. In an interview with Radio Times, she said, “My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it: I am serious about giving up acting.” She also added, “When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud. I’m not that person.”

Blanchett has also shared that she did not originally plan to become an actress. Speaking about her early life and first steps into drama, she once explained, “We had an amazing drama teacher… I was doing it for fun, and then I was going to go and get a proper job.” She said acting eventually found her rather than the other way around.

The incident at the Olivier Awards quickly spread online, with people reacting to the brief but noticeable red carpet exchange.

At the same time, Blanchett continues to balance major stage work with public appearances, while also speaking openly about how difficult she sometimes finds life in the spotlight.
