Lena Headey is looking back on some of the hardest moments of her Hollywood career, opening up about the pressure placed on women in the industry, her experience with powerful men, and the surprising backlash she faced from some ‘Game of Thrones’ fans.

In a new interview with The Telegraph, the Emmy-nominated actress spoke about the culture that allowed certain men in Hollywood to misuse their power. Headey, who accused producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment in 2017, said the industry often protected powerful figures while leaving young actresses in vulnerable positions.

Headey described the imbalance between people with influence and actors who are simply trying to build their careers. “The weird protection that we offer predatory men in the business because of the disproportionate power they wield, set against the need among vulnerable actresses to work to put food on the table to get the job — it makes me very angry,” she told The Telegraph.

The actress previously spoke about an uncomfortable encounter with Weinstein while they were promoting the 2005 film ‘The Brothers Grimm’. Headey recalled feeling that something was wrong when Weinstein invited her to his hotel years later under the idea of discussing a script.

“We walked to the lift, and the energy shifted,” Headey said. She explained that she immediately felt uncomfortable and told him, “I’m not interested in anything other than work, please don’t think I got in here with you for any other reason, nothing is going to happen.”

Looking back at her early career, Headey said she believes many young actresses were expected to accept uncomfortable situations as part of the job. She explained that when she first started acting, there was an unspoken expectation that female performers had to take on romantic and sexual roles without questioning whether they felt safe.

“There was this rite of passage all young female actors had to go through, which usually involved snogging and falling in love, and having sex and showing your boobs,” she said.

Headey admitted that, at the time, she often did not realize she had the right to push back. “I’d just arrive on a set and be, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got a job.’ And when it came to those moments, I don’t think I even questioned that I should be safe.”

Her experience changed by the time she joined ‘Game of Thrones’ as Cersei Lannister. By then, Headey felt more confident about protecting herself on set, especially compared with younger performers who were still learning how to handle difficult situations.

“By that point I’d been through the wringer. I could stand up for myself,” she told The Telegraph.

However, even with that confidence, Headey still faced major criticism from fans when she used a body double for Cersei’s famous walk of shame scene in Season 5. The decision sparked online anger from viewers who felt she should have performed the nude scene herself.

Headey said she was shocked by the reaction. “I was really shocked by the anger, by this idea that I’d duped the audience,” she explained.

What do you think about Lena Headey’s comments on Hollywood and ‘Game of Thrones’?

The actress said the choice allowed her to focus on the emotional side of the scene instead of worrying about being exposed in front of thousands of people. She also previously told Entertainment Weekly that some fans treated her differently because she chose not to appear nude.

“Some people thought I was less of an actress because I didn’t get my tits out,” Headey said at the time.

For Headey, the issue was never about refusing certain scenes. It was about having control over how she approached her work and protecting herself while delivering the strongest performance possible.
