The Reason Jack Black Says This Is the Greatest Movie Score Ever
Jack Black is widely known for his energetic rock background and his work as part of the band Tenacious D, as well as his love for classic heavy metal artists like Ronnie James Dio. In interviews and public comments, he has often talked about how much he enjoys powerful, loud music and theatrical performances.
But according to entertainment reporting and past interview remarks, his taste in film music goes beyond rock and heavy metal. He has also shown a strong appreciation for more unusual and atmospheric movie scores, especially ones that feel unsettling or eerie.
When asked about his favorite film music, Black did not choose some of the most commonly praised Hollywood scores like John Williams’ Star Wars or Ennio Morricone’s Western compositions. Instead, he pointed to the music connected to Stanley Kubrick’s film Eyes Wide Shut.
That film includes music created by Jocelyn Pook, along with classical works by composers such as György Ligeti and Dmitri Shostakovich. The result is a score that is often described as strange, haunting, and deeply atmospheric.
Black has explained his taste in simple terms, saying, “My taste runs toward the creepy.” He also highlighted how much he respects the overall sound design of Kubrick’s movies, not just Eyes Wide Shut, but others like The Shining, which also uses music to create tension and discomfort.
In his view, the most powerful film music is not always the most heroic or uplifting. Instead, he is drawn to sounds that create unease and mystery, especially when they support disturbing or dreamlike imagery on screen.
While many actors and musicians tend to pick large orchestral blockbusters as their favorites, Black’s choice stands out for leaning into darker and more experimental territory.
At the same time, Black remains very active in mainstream entertainment. He recently appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, reprising his role as Bowser. The film has been a major commercial success and includes new musical performances tied to his character, continuing the trend that began with his viral song “Peaches.”
He is also preparing for upcoming projects, including the next installment of the Jumanji franchise, which is expected to continue his mix of comedy, adventure, and larger-than-life characters.
Even with that mainstream success, his comments about film music show a different side of his creative interests. Instead of focusing only on blockbuster themes, he has shown appreciation for more unsettling and experimental soundscapes that shape the emotional tone of a film in less obvious ways.
