Kenneth Branagh started something big when he brought the God of Thunder to the big screen, and now, more than a decade later, he wants to be the one to finish it. The acclaimed filmmaker, who directed the original ‘Thor’ in 2011, has opened up about his desire to helm one final chapter for Chris Hemsworth’s beloved Marvel character, and his vision for it sounds notably different from anything the franchise has delivered in years.

Speaking with Business Insider, Branagh reflected on his experience making the first film and confirmed that Marvel had wanted him to return for ‘Thor: The Dark World’, but he turned it down because three years on the original production had pushed him to his limit. He told the outlet that he had been approached for the sequel and that Marvel was disappointed when he declined, adding simply, “I don’t have it in me.”

That break stretched into something longer, as the franchise passed through the hands of Alan Taylor for ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and then Taika Waititi for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. Branagh said he watched the sequels with “a mix of tremendous pride and amazement at the many ways such stories can go.” But he has never fully let go of the character, and his comments to Business Insider make clear that a specific creative vision has been taking shape in his mind for some time.

The vision he describes is a grounded, emotional farewell in the spirit of James Mangold’s ‘Logan’, the stripped-back Wolverine story that won over critics and audiences with its raw, intimate approach to superhero storytelling.

Branagh wants something similar for the Asgardian, a final film that trades spectacle for meaning and gives Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and the rest of the ensemble a proper closing chapter. Whether or not he would direct it himself remains another matter entirely, as he acknowledged that Marvel’s long-term planning likely has its own answer to that question already.

The timing of Branagh’s comments aligns with wider MCU conversations around ‘Thor 5’, with Hemsworth himself having stated in a recent podcast appearance that he expects to play the character a “couple more times.” Waititi has separately confirmed he will not be returning to direct. Hemsworth has also been vocal about wanting to steer the character in a more serious direction, particularly following the criticism that ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ leaned too heavily into comedy.

Branagh watched the various sequels unfold from a distance and reflected that it “would be something very beautiful to take those characters into their own particular sunset,” describing it as potentially “a beautiful thing.” The original director returning to close the loop on the story he helped build carries an obvious appeal, and MCU fans seem more than ready for a version of Thor that takes the character seriously again.

In the meantime, Hemsworth is already set to return as Thor in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which will give audiences another look at where the character stands before any standalone finale becomes a conversation worth having. Whether Branagh is ultimately involved or not, the case he is making for a final, character-driven Thor story is one that Marvel would be wise to hear.
