The upcoming HBO series “Lanterns” is facing early fan debate, and the show’s creative team is now addressing the criticism head-on.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, showrunner Chris Mundy spoke about the reaction to the first trailer and the concerns some viewers have raised. Mundy, known for his work on “Ozark,” was asked about the challenge of shaping a DC story that also fits HBO’s more grounded drama style.

He said the process was more enjoyable than difficult. “It was less challenging than it was just exciting. Our take was that we have this incredibly rich mythology within the Green Lantern canon, and we have this incredibly rich history of Sunday night HBO shows—everything from The Sopranos to Game of Thrones and in between.”

Mundy explained that the goal was to focus on the characters as people first, while still respecting the source material from the comics. “The fun of it was to try to create a real, layered drama that dealt with who these characters are as human beings while still staying true to the spirit of what makes the comics so special,” he said.

He also added that the show is designed to work for both new viewers and longtime fans. According to Mundy, the writers wanted it to be easy to follow for people who do not know the comics, but also detailed enough for fans who already understand the deeper lore. “So, yes, it was challenging, but only in the way that the most fun things are,” he said.

The discussion comes after early reactions to the trailer sparked criticism online. Some fans have questioned the direction of the show, saying it feels more grounded than expected and does not lean heavily enough into the more cosmic parts of the Green Lantern mythology. Others have also debated the show’s title and its focus on earth-based storytelling.

Despite that, the series is expected to still include key elements from the comics. The story follows two intergalactic officers who become involved in a murder investigation on Earth. The show is also expected to introduce familiar characters from the Green Lantern universe, including Sinestro, a major figure linked to the Yellow Lantern Corps in the comics.

There are also hints that the series could expand further in future seasons, potentially exploring other parts of the Lantern mythology if the show continues.

The broader DC Universe has already started introducing Green Lantern characters in other projects, including Nathan Fillion’s version of Guy Gardner, who appeared in the 2025 “Superman” film and is expected to return in “Lanterns.”

At this stage, HBO has confirmed that “Lanterns” is set to premiere on August 16.

Early backlash is pretty common with big comic adaptations, especially when the tone is not exactly what fans expect. What Mundy is describing sounds like a mix of crime drama and superhero story, which could work if the writing is strong. It will be interesting to see if viewers warm up to it once more footage is released. What do you think about this direction for a Green Lantern show?
