Barbie Ferreira is once again getting a lot of attention online, but the conversation around her latest appearance is not something she seems comfortable with. In a new interview with Bustle, the actress spoke openly about how public attention has followed her for years and how it continues to shape the way people see her.

Ferreira recently posed for a photo shoot that quickly went viral. While many focused on how she looks now, she made it clear that this kind of reaction is nothing new in her life. “It’s hard because my whole family fluctuates in weight,” she said. “I started modeling at 16, and I’ve looked different every year for over a decade. It’s very trendy right now to talk about women’s bodies, which is exactly why I personally don’t talk about it.”

She explained that constant discussion about appearance puts women in a difficult position. “There is so much discourse around what I look like and what other women look like all the time. As women, we are in a losing game.” According to Ferreira, no matter what someone looks like, there is always criticism.

The actress, known for her role in Euphoria, said this kind of attention started very early. “People talk about weight gain from my Tumblr days. I was 14 years old in my mother’s room!” she shared, pointing out how long people have been watching and commenting on her body.

She also talked about how she was labeled early in her career without fully understanding it. “I didn’t even know what activism meant,” she said. “I’d put on a bikini for a campaign, everyone would get mad, and suddenly I was an activist. I’m 17 years old thinking, ‘Sure, I’ll be an activist if that’s what you want.’ But I don’t think that’s what true activism is.”

Even positive comments can feel complicated. “That’s why unhealthy eating patterns continue. You want people to think you look good,” Ferreira explained. “It’s funny how people never say ‘you look great’ when someone gains weight. I honestly believe many people would look great if they gained some weight!”

Away from the spotlight, she tries to keep things simple. She said she often stays at home when she feels overwhelmed. “My response to stress is to stay home. I will hermit, and that’s OK,” she said. She also enjoys small, fun traditions like visiting Renaissance fairs every year.

Ferreira also mentioned how the industry can shape personalities, bringing up Jennifer Lawrence as an example. “Women are often told to be smaller in this job,” she said, adding that she prefers to show her real personality in spaces where she feels comfortable.

Even though she is not returning for Euphoria, she still supports the show and her former co-stars. At the same time, she is focused on new work, including the films Faces of Death and Mile End Kicks, which are releasing close to each other.

Through it all, Ferreira made one thing clear in her interview with Bustle. The attention may not stop, but she is not interested in letting it define her.
