Stanley Tucci says he would be open to returning for a third The Devil Wears Prada movie, but only if the story makes sense.

Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter while promoting “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” Tucci talked about stepping back into the role of Nigel and whether he could see himself coming back again in the future.

“I love playing this character. He’s so incredibly satisfying to play,” Tucci said.

The actor explained that he, along with the filmmakers, would only move forward with another sequel if the script was strong enough.

“But in the end, I think for all of us, including the director and the writer, it really depends on the script,” he said. “If it makes sense, yeah, sure. If it doesn’t make sense? Probably not.”

Tucci said one reason he wanted to return for the second movie was because Nigel had not changed much over the years. According to him, the character is still working at Runway magazine and still deeply connected to Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly.

“There had been very little movement career-wise,” Tucci said about Nigel. He added that Nigel and Miranda still depend on each other despite the betrayal fans saw in the first film.

“They need each other. It’s a sort of perfect symbiotic relationship,” he explained.

The sequel also touches on bigger issues inside the fashion and media world, including AI and the decline of traditional journalism. Tucci said he liked that the movie was about more than just fashion and glamorous outfits.

“There are a lot of odds stacked against journalists now, magazines [and] newspapers because of AI [and] our phones,” he said. “The lack of a need for in-depth content is starting to disappear. I like that the story of the film addresses that.”

Tucci also warned that AI could seriously change the future of jobs and media industries.

“A huge number of jobs are just going to be gone,” he said during the interview.

Alongside the movie, Tucci is also teaming up with TJ Maxx for a new ad campaign inspired by one of Nigel’s lines in the sequel. In the film, Nigel jokes, “Look what TJ Maxx dragged in,” when Anne Hathaway’s Andy returns to Runway magazine.

Tucci said he immediately liked the joke when he first read it in the script.

“I laughed straight away when I read it!” he said.
