Sarah Shahi is looking back on one of her most memorable moments from “The Sopranos,” and it involves the late James Gandolfini. The actress recently appeared on the “Bossticks” podcast, where she talked about her guest role on the famous HBO crime drama and the intimate scenes she filmed with Gandolfini, who played the legendary mob boss Tony Soprano.

Shahi, who appeared in the show’s sixth season in 2007, admitted she was surprised by how strong the chemistry was between her and Gandolfini while filming their scenes. “I did a sex scene with Tony Soprano,” Shahi said on the podcast. She then added, “One of the best, I have to say, kisses I’ve ever had.”

The actress explained that she initially wondered how she would handle a romantic scene with Gandolfini, who was known more for playing tough and intimidating characters than traditional romantic leads.

“I remember thinking to myself, ‘How am I going to get turned on by this 47-year-old large, balding man?’ There’s nothing… how is this going to work for me? Oh boy, did it work for me!” she recalled.

Shahi said Gandolfini’s dedication to his acting helped make the scenes feel more realistic. She described him as a very committed performer who paid close attention to details, even when filming unusual moments.

One scene she remembered involved their characters taking mushrooms. According to Shahi, Gandolfini wanted the props to feel authentic and asked for small details that could help create a stronger reaction during filming.

“He’s a very method actor. So, he wanted props,” Shahi explained. She said the team used fake mushrooms with added flavor so the actors could react naturally during the scene.

The actress also shared a funny behind-the-scenes memory from filming the moment. She said there was a scene where she sat on Gandolfini’s lap and the two characters kissed after taking the mushrooms.

According to Shahi, the chemistry continued even after the director called for a break.

“When they called ‘cut,’ we were still kissing… we were still kissing,” she said. “We did it three, four times and every time they would call ‘cut’ and we’re still making out.”

On “The Sopranos,” Shahi played Sonya Aragon, a college student and stripper who becomes connected to Tony Soprano after the death of Christopher Moltisanti’s father-in-law. Her character appears in the episode “Kennedy and Heidi,” which follows Tony as he experiences a strange emotional journey after a tragic event.

The episode is remembered as one of the show’s more unusual chapters, mixing crime drama with a surreal storyline as Tony deals with guilt, grief, and personal reflection.

Gandolfini’s performance as Tony Soprano remains one of the most praised television performances of all time. The actor helped make the HBO series a major success and changed the way audiences viewed TV dramas. He passed away in 2013 at age 51 after suffering a heart attack.

For Shahi, the experience remains a special part of her career. Her comments show how much she respected working with Gandolfini and how memorable their short time together on the groundbreaking series was.
