Director Simon McQuoid Reveals What He Fixed In ‘Mortal Kombat II’ After Fan Complaints
Simon McQuoid says fan reactions to the first Mortal Kombat helped shape major changes for Mortal Kombat II, especially when it came to female characters and expanding the story world.
Speaking with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, McQuoid explained that one of the biggest things he wanted to improve in the sequel was female representation. He said the team talked about it a lot while planning the new movie.
According to McQuoid, “It was very important to me, and everyone, that the female representation got rebalanced: Kitana, Jade, Sindel.”
The sequel introduces several major female fighters from the video game franchise. Adeline Rudolph plays Kitana, Tati Gabrielle plays Jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen takes on the role of Sindel. Cast members have also spoken positively about the larger number of female characters in the movie compared to the first film.
Another major addition is Johnny Cage, one of the most well-known characters from the Mortal Kombat games. Fans were disappointed when he was missing from the 2021 movie, but McQuoid said the team originally left him out because they worried he would take attention away from the rest of the cast.
Now, Johnny Cage officially joins the sequel and is played by Karl Urban. McQuoid and screenwriter Jeremy Slater built the story around a bigger and more ambitious tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld.
McQuoid also said the sequel aims to feel much larger in scale. He explained that working with IMAX gave the team a chance to push the visuals and world-building even further.
He said, “I wanted to be more expansive. I felt that Mortal Kombat had this opportunity to be kind of big, grand, epic scale.” He added that he wanted to include more famous parts of the franchise, including characters like Shao Kahn and Baraka.
Bringing Baraka to the screen was especially challenging for the filmmakers. McQuoid admitted, “I have no idea how we’re going to bring into life, but that is a great creative challenge.”
The sequel continues the story after the first movie focused on Cole Young discovering his connection to Earthrealm’s fighters. This time, the story moves deeper into the tournament itself as Earthrealm battles Outworld directly.
Alongside Karl Urban, the cast includes Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Martyn Ford, and CJ Bloomfield.

According to reports mentioned in the ScreenRant interview coverage, Mortal Kombat II has already received a stronger early reaction than the first movie and is expected to perform well at the box office.
