Greenland 2: Migration has quickly become the most-watched movie on HBO Max since its release, even though critics and audiences have not been fully impressed by it.

According to streaming charts reported by HBO Max’s Top 10 Most Watched list, the disaster sequel shot straight to number one soon after debuting and pushed other popular titles down the rankings.

The film is a follow-up to the 2020 disaster movie Greenland, which starred Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin. Both actors return in the sequel, along with Roman Griffith Davis, continuing the story of a family trying to survive after a catastrophic comet strike destroys most of Earth.

In this new chapter, the world is still in ruins. The Garrity family leaves their bunker in Greenland and travels across a broken planet in search of safety. Their goal is to reach a crater in France that may have breathable air and a chance for survival. The journey is meant to be dangerous and emotional, but reactions suggest it does not hit the same impact as the first film.

Critics have been especially harsh. Many say the sequel loses the emotional strength that made the original stand out. Instead of focusing on a tight family survival story, they argue the film feels scattered and less engaging.

Film critic Grant Watson of Fiction Machine said, “That deeply personal edge in the original film now feels badly blunted. Stars Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin both return, but this time their race for survival feels perfunctory. Worse than that: it feels dull.”

Watson’s review reflects a common criticism that the sequel relies too much on spectacle without delivering strong emotional stakes. Some reviewers also felt the story was stretched and uneven, with moments that should feel intense coming across as rushed or flat.

Audience reactions have been slightly more forgiving, but still mixed. The film currently holds a 66% audience score, which shows that viewers are divided but not fully negative. Some fans appreciated the continuation of the story and the performances, while others felt the sequel did not fully develop its ideas.

One viewer shared a more balanced opinion, saying, “While Greenland 2 is better than its predecessor, it still doesn’t achieve what it could have. It feels like they tried to put too much in it, making what should have been powerful scenes feel rushed and too easy. For the most part, the performances are well done. The concept is entertaining but not fully fleshed out.”

Even with these criticisms, the movie has clearly found an audience on streaming. Its fast rise to the top of HBO Max shows that disaster films still attract strong viewer interest, especially when tied to familiar characters and high-stakes survival stories.

However, the gap between popularity and reception is noticeable. While many people are watching Greenland 2: Migration out of curiosity or franchise loyalty, reviews suggest it does not reach the same level as the original Greenland.

For now, the sequel remains a streaming hit, but its long-term reputation will likely depend on whether viewers continue watching it despite the criticism or move on once the initial interest fades.
