Supriya Ganesh Reacts to Online Backlash After Her Exit From ‘The Pitt’
Supriya Ganesh spoke about the online reaction to her exit from The Pitt during an interview with Variety at the Gold Gala red carpet. The comments came after news broke that she would be stepping away from the role of Dr. Samira Mohan following Season 2 of the series, as reported by Variety.
Ganesh said the response online was overwhelming, especially when her name started trending shortly after the news came out. She explained that she chose to step back from following the reactions too closely.
She said, “I tried to take a step away, because it’s just been so surreal. The day that news broke, I saw my name was trending on Twitter, and I was like, ‘Gotta put the phone down and go outside.’ So, I haven’t really been keeping track of it, to be honest, but I’ve been getting such sweet, lovely messages from people, and I’ve honestly just been surprised at how much people love the character and saw so much of themselves in her, and that’s what I’m going to miss.”
The exit from The Pitt was first reported in April, when it was confirmed that Ganesh would no longer continue as a series regular after Season 2. Around the same time, the show also promoted Ayesha Harris, who plays Dr. Parker Ellis, to a larger role as the series prepares for Season 3.
Even though she is leaving the show, Ganesh hinted that she is not stepping away from acting. She shared that there are still new projects ahead, even if she cannot reveal details yet. She said she has “a couple of things in the pipeline.”
Ganesh also reflected on how viewers connected with her character and her wider writing work, especially a personal essay she wrote for Vulture about gender and queer identity. She said the reaction to that piece has been meaningful and surprising.
She explained, “It’s definitely a scary thing to put out there, because it’s such a complex experience and something that’s so personal that I remember when I was writing it, I like, ‘I don’t know if anyone’s going to get this. But that’s okay, because even if one person gets it like, I’m writing for that person.’”

She added that hearing from readers and students who use her essay in academic discussions has been especially powerful for her. She said, “I get DMs from people being like, ‘I’m taking your essay to my queer theory class and discussing it in class tomorrow.’ That’s just so surreal to me, because I remember being in women’s and gender studies classes, and discussing and debating ideas. It’s just great that it’s part of the conversation.”
The Pitt continues on HBO Max, with Season 2 fully available to stream. HBO leadership has already confirmed that the series has been renewed for a third season, meaning the story will continue even after Ganesh’s departure.
