First Look at ‘Minecraft 2’ Reveals Kirsten Dunst’s Role in Sequel Tease
A new chapter in the Minecraft film universe is moving forward as sequel is officially in development. The original movie, released in 2025, quickly sparked discussions about expanding the story further, especially since the game world offers endless possibilities for new characters, locations, and adventures.
Behind the scenes, director Jared Hess and the creative team have already shared that there were many ideas left out of the first film, with plans to bring some of those concepts into the next installment. Production updates continued into 2026, including a major casting announcement that has now brought more attention to the project.
Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast as Alex. The news was confirmed in March, with further updates suggesting the sequel will carry the working title A Minecraft Sequel. According to reports shared by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., the film is currently scheduled for release in July 2027, with Hess returning as director and Chris Galletta co-writing the screenplay.
Dunst also shared the first set photo on Instagram, showing her involvement in the project. Along with the image, she wrote the caption, “It has begun….”
The sequel is being produced by Legendary Pictures, which also backed the first film. Early production notes suggest the creative team is aiming to expand the world in a much larger way this time, building on what worked in the original while exploring new story directions.

There is still no full plot synopsis available, but the addition of Alex hints that the story will likely lean more into survival, exploration, and adventure elements from the game itself. With the Minecraft universe known for its open-ended structure, the sequel is expected to introduce new biomes, characters, and challenges that were not included in the first film.
