More than 15 years after the first movie arrived in theaters, a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin is finally moving forward.

Director Peter Jackson recently confirmed during the Cannes Film Festival that work has officially started on the long-awaited follow-up. Jackson revealed that he is currently writing the screenplay and plans to direct the movie himself.

The sequel has been discussed for years, but fans slowly started to lose hope as time passed without any major updates. The original film was released back in 2011 and was directed by Steven Spielberg, while Jackson worked as a producer. At the time, the plan was always for Spielberg to direct the first movie and for Jackson to take over directing duties for the sequel later on.

However, Jackson became busy with his work on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the rest of The Hobbit trilogy, which pushed the Tintin sequel further and further back.

Even with the long delay, the people behind the movie never completely gave up on the project. Reports over the years suggested that much of the original cast was expected to return. That includes Jamie Bell as Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thomson and Thompson.

The first Tintin movie followed the young reporter and his dog Snowy as they became caught up in a dangerous mystery involving a hidden treasure. The movie used motion-capture animation and mixed fast-paced action with comedy and adventure in a style many viewers compared to classic Spielberg films from the 1980s.

When the film first came out, critics mostly reacted positively. It currently holds a strong score on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised for its animation, action scenes, and visual style. Many reviewers said Spielberg brought real energy to the movie and captured the adventurous feeling of the original Tintin comics created by Hergé.

Critics also praised the chemistry between Tintin and Captain Haddock, especially Andy Serkis’ performance. Some reviewers even called it one of the best animated adventure movies released during that period.

Still, not every reaction was completely positive. A few critics felt the motion-capture animation looked strange at times, especially in close-up facial scenes. Others believed the story focused too heavily on action and moved too quickly in certain parts. Even with those complaints, the movie developed a loyal fanbase over the years and many viewers considered it one of Spielberg’s most underrated films.

The movie also performed well financially. It earned around $374 million worldwide against a reported budget of $135 million, making it a commercial success even if it did not become a massive blockbuster in the United States.

Jackson’s latest update is the clearest sign yet that the sequel is finally happening. However, fans may still have a long wait ahead. Animated movies, especially ones using motion-capture technology, take years to complete. Since Jackson only recently confirmed he started writing the script, the movie is likely still several years away from release.

For now, fans of Tintin can at least feel relieved knowing the sequel is no longer just an idea being talked about behind the scenes. After years of rumors and delays, the adventure finally seems ready to continue.
