‘Bad Boys’ Star Will Smith Heads to Prison in Explosive New Amazon Thriller ‘Supermax’

Will Smith is heading back into action with a brand-new thriller called Supermax. According to Deadline, the actor has officially signed on to star in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios movie, which will be directed by David Gordon Green.

The film follows two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Smith will play one of the lead agents, while casting is still underway for the female co-star who will partner with him on the dangerous case.

Deadline reported that Amazon MGM Studios secured worldwide rights to the project in a deal said to be worth around $70 million. The movie is expected to be released as a streaming title instead of getting a theatrical run.

Supermax is written by David Weil and David J. Rosen, who previously worked on shows like Hunters and Invasion. Production is scheduled to begin in mid-August.

The movie also marks an important step in Will Smith’s career comeback. After the controversy surrounding the Oscars slap incident in 2022, Smith has mostly stayed connected to franchise projects. His biggest recent success was Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which performed strongly at the box office and reminded studios that audiences still show up for his action movies.

David Gordon Green is also coming into the project with plenty of experience in the thriller and horror world. He directed several Halloween movies and recently worked on the Amazon TV series Scarpetta. Supermax is expected to be the biggest-budget film of his career so far.

The project has several big names attached behind the scenes as well. Producers include Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman from The Picture Company, along with Will Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook Studios. Deadline also noted that Amazon moved quickly to lock down the project before it could officially hit the Cannes market.

The story itself already sounds intense, with the setting inside a high-security prison adding a tense and dangerous atmosphere. While plot details are still being kept secret, the mix of FBI agents, murder mystery, and prison action is already creating buzz online.

For now, fans will have to wait for more casting news and a release date, but Supermax is shaping up to be one of Amazon MGM’s biggest action projects in development.
