Netflix Keeps Winning With Action Thrillers – Here’s Why
Netflix has quietly become the biggest home for R-rated action blockbusters, and according to a new report from TheWrap, that success is no accident. Movies like The Rip, War Machine, Thrash, and Apex have all turned into massive streaming hits in 2026, proving there is still a huge audience for adult-focused thrillers and action movies that Hollywood studios have mostly stopped making for theaters.
The report explains that all four movies became global successes for Netflix this year. Each one reached the Top 10 charts in almost every country where Netflix is available, while films like War Machine stayed in the streamer’s Top 10 for weeks. According to Netflix insiders cited by TheWrap, viewers who watched one of these movies usually ended up watching the others too, showing that audiences are actively looking for this style of movie.
Netflix executive Ori Marmur told TheWrap that the company intentionally decided to focus on these kinds of original films while major studios continue prioritizing franchises, remakes, superhero movies, and family-friendly releases. “It has been a conscious decision to fill gaps in the marketplace when legacy studios are leaning into reboots and remakes,” Marmur explained.
He also said Netflix wants to make movies that feel both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. “Our strategy is not strictly R-rated but wholly original films that feel nostalgic to older audiences and fresh to younger audiences,” he said. Marmur added that viewers still love high-concept action thrillers similar to the movies that dominated theaters in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
TheWrap’s report points out that theatrical studios rarely make these kinds of movies anymore. Big box office hits are now mostly superhero films, animated movies, and PG-13 franchises designed for the widest possible audience. Meanwhile, Netflix has been investing heavily in violent thrillers, survival stories, cop dramas, shark movies, and sci-fi action films made for adults.
Producer Lucy Damon also spoke to TheWrap about the success of The Rip, the Ben Affleck and Matt Damon thriller that became one of Netflix’s biggest movies of the year. She said the team always believed audiences still wanted these kinds of films. “These are the kind of movies we grew up watching and love,” Damon said. “I actually don’t know why more of them aren’t made.”
War Machine director Patrick Hughes shared a similar opinion while discussing his sci-fi action movie starring Alan Ritchson. Hughes described the project as a throwback to older action films and praised Netflix for supporting the large-scale vision of the movie. Ritchson also thanked the streamer for allowing filmmakers to still make ambitious original action movies.
The report also revealed that Netflix stepped in to save Thrash after Sony reportedly decided not to release the shark thriller theatrically. Producer Kevin Messick explained that Netflix quickly picked up the film and rushed to finish post-production in time for its release date. The movie later became another major streaming success.
Netflix already has more adult-focused thrillers coming later this year, including The Last House, The Whisper Man, Animals, and a new Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher project connected to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to TheWrap’s report, Netflix appears fully committed to continuing its strategy of reviving the R-rated blockbuster for streaming audiences around the world.
