Ben Affleck’s Batman Resurfaces in Never-Before-Seen Photos and Fans Are Going Wild
New behind-the-scenes photos of Ben Affleck’s Batman have surfaced online, giving fans a rare look at the early suit tests created by Ironhead Studios. The images show Affleck in the Batsuit during an early costume fitting, long before the final version appeared on screen in the DC films.
The photos were shared on Instagram by Ironhead Studios, which worked on developing the suit designs for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Along with the images, the studio highlighted a key moment from the test. “The first time the Bat turned his head,” they wrote, referring to the early suit’s movement and design breakthrough.
Affleck’s Batman first appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), where he played an older, more hardened version of Bruce Wayne. This interpretation of Batman was meant to show a character who had been fighting crime for years and had grown more violent and cynical over time. He later returned in Justice League (2017) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), as well as a brief appearance in The Flash (2023).
At one point, Affleck was also set to direct and star in his own standalone Batman film, often referred to as “The Batman” during early development. The project was planned as a darker, detective-focused story and was intended to expand his version of the character within the DC Extended Universe. However, the film was eventually cancelled in its original form.
Affleck later stepped away from the role entirely. In interviews, he explained that the experience had become creatively and personally exhausting. He also said that the repeated production issues, script changes, and overall direction of the DC film universe contributed to his decision to leave. He described it as a situation where he no longer found enjoyment in the role and needed to move on.

Eventually, the standalone Batman project he was developing was reworked and handed to director Matt Reeves, who later created The Batman (2022) starring Robert Pattinson. That version of the character moved in a different direction and became its own separate interpretation outside of Affleck’s storyline.
The newly shared suit test photos now give fans a glimpse of what that earlier era of Batman could have looked like behind the scenes. They also highlight how much work went into designing the armor and movement of the character before it reached the screen.
Ironhead Studios shared the images as part of a look back at their design process, offering a reminder of the practical craftsmanship behind one of the most recognizable superhero costumes in modern film.
