Dean DeBlois Wraps ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Filming and Teases First Look at Sequel
Filmmaker Dean DeBlois has confirmed that production on How to Train Your Dragon 2 has officially wrapped. The announcement comes after 81 days of filming, marking the end of principal photography on the live-action sequel.
DeBlois shared the update along with a first look image of Hiccup, played by Mason Thames, holding a sword. According to his post, the film is now moving into post-production, where visual effects and editing will shape the final cut. The information was shared directly by DeBlois via social media.
The film continues the story established in the 2025 live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which was a strong box office success, earning over $636 million worldwide. DeBlois, who co-created the original animated franchise, returns once again as director, writer, and executive producer for the sequel.
The cast brings back Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. Gerard Butler returns as Stoick the Vast, while Cate Blanchett reprises her role as Valka, Hiccup’s mother. The sequel also introduces new and returning supporting characters, including Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the villain Drago Bludvist and Phil Dunster as Eret, son of Eret. Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn round out the ensemble as Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut.
The story is expected to follow the events of the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2, continuing Hiccup’s journey as he grows into leadership while facing new threats and challenges in a changing world. The production team includes Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, working under Marc Platt Productions.

The release date for How to Train Your Dragon 2 is currently set for June 11, 2027, with post-production now underway after filming completion.
