Sam Heughan Reveals How Young Jamie Was Created for ‘Outlander’ Finale Scene
Sam Heughan is talking about one of the most surprising moments in the Outlander series finale, where his character Jamie Fraser appears much younger again. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Heughan explained how the production achieved the de-aged look and also shared his thoughts on the ending of the long-running Starz series.
The final episode briefly shows Jamie looking like his younger self, similar to how he appeared in the early seasons of the show. While some fans assumed the scene used older unused footage, Heughan confirmed that it was newly filmed material from 2025. Despite the transformation on screen, he said there was no advanced digital trick behind it.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly alongside Caitríona Balfe, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts, and executive producer Maril Davis, Heughan said the effect was done in a very simple way. “They needed a lot of work to get me to that young,” he said jokingly. He then made it clear there was no CGI de-aging involved. “It’s a lot of makeup.”
His co-star Caitríona Balfe reacted warmly to the look and told him he still appeared youthful on screen. Heughan responded lightly, “Thank you, darling.” The cast and crew also joked that Heughan’s natural appearance helped make the transformation easier to achieve.
The series itself is based on the books by Diana Gabaldon and follows Claire Fraser, a 20th-century nurse who travels back in time and meets Jamie Fraser in 18th-century Scotland. Over eight seasons, the story followed their relationship through war, political conflict, and time travel, building one of television’s most dedicated fan bases.
According to Heughan, the final scene of the show is still open to interpretation. He said even the cast is unsure what truly happens to Jamie and Claire at the end. He suggested that Claire’s possible supernatural abilities may play a role in the outcome, pointing back to earlier moments in the series where she displays unusual healing power.
“There was, I believe, an element of Claire having a power,” Heughan explained in his interview with Entertainment Weekly. He added that the ending could be understood in different ways depending on the viewer, especially when it comes to whether the couple survives or moves into another kind of existence together.

Caitríona Balfe also shared her thoughts in the same interview. She admitted that the ending was emotional and hard to fully process after just one viewing. Like Heughan, she said she was not completely sure what happens in the final moments but appreciated the dramatic storytelling and the return of the ghost-like Jamie storyline.
The Outlander finale closes a major chapter for both actors, who have played their roles since 2014. While the story has ended on screen, both cast members agree that the meaning of the final scenes will likely remain open to debate among fans.
