Peter Jackson has finally spoken about one of the most talked-about casting changes from “The Lovely Bones,” where Ryan Gosling was originally set to play the father of Saoirse Ronan’s character before being replaced during pre-production.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jackson addressed the situation while attending Cannes after receiving an Honorary Palme d’Or. The director was asked about Gosling’s earlier comments, where the actor said he was fired from the 2009 film after gaining weight for the role.

Jackson did not speak directly about Gosling’s specific case, but he explained how recasting decisions usually happen from a filmmaker’s point of view. He said it is rarely about blaming an actor and more about the overall fit between the performer, the story, and the rest of the production.

“I won’t talk about any particular examples of actors because it’s a personal, private thing and it’s not their fault,” Jackson said. He added that when actors are replaced, he sees it as a mistake in casting rather than a failure by the performer.

He continued by explaining that filmmaking depends heavily on chemistry between cast members and the creative team. Sometimes, he said, even a talented actor may not fit the direction the film ultimately needs.

“Films are a chemistry both on camera and behind the camera. They’re chemistry in terms of what the actor conveys to the audience of the film,” Jackson said. “It’s just a complicated sort of amalgam of communication of how somebody gels into a group of people, into a story, into a character.”

Jackson also said casting is a process where filmmakers try to get everything right before shooting begins, but sometimes adjustments are necessary when the vision does not match what is happening on screen.

Ryan Gosling previously spoke about the situation in a 2010 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He said there was a misunderstanding in how the character should look and how he prepared for the role. He explained that he believed the father character should be much heavier and committed to that physical transformation without further discussion during pre-production.

Gosling said, “We had a different idea of how the character should look. I really believed he should be 210 pounds.” He also reflected on the experience more humorously, saying, “Then I was fat and unemployed.”

Saoirse Ronan later commented on the recasting during a 2024 appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. She said she had already begun preparing with the original cast before Gosling was replaced and had bonded with him during that time.

Ronan explained that the decision was not personal and came down to creative direction. She said she understood why the change happened and noted that Mark Wahlberg, who replaced Gosling, brought a different kind of lived experience to the role as a father.

“It’s not personal, necessarily. It’s like sometimes you’re just not on the same page,” Ronan said.

The recasting of “The Lovely Bones” remains one of Hollywood’s more unusual production stories, with both Jackson and the actors involved later describing it as a mismatch in expectations rather than a conflict.
