Few actors have a longer history with Marvel Studios than Paul Bettany. He first appeared in the franchise as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. in 2008 and later became Vision in 2015. Since then, he has been through death, reconstruction and a very strange sitcom.

Robert Downey Jr.’s journey has been just as unusual. He starred in ‘Iron Man’ and spent a decade playing Tony Stark across 10 films, only for the character to die in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. His comeback as the villain Doctor Doom was revealed at Comic-Con in 2024, shocking the franchise.

Now Bettany has found a humorous way to comment on that return. During a BBC Radio 1 interview with film critic Ali Plumb, conducted while he promoted ‘VisionQuest’, he said he briefly held the title of longest-running person in the MCU. That ended when Downey came back as Doctor Doom.

Bettany jokingly accused his longtime colleague of stealing his legacy, adding that Downey has taken plenty of other things from him too. He then suggested he might still outlast his rival. The remark is clearly playful, which fits Bettany’s reputation for dry humor.

The joke lands because the two actors share so much history. Bettany has also been generous toward Downey in other interviews. He has said Downey should have won an Oscar for his work as Tony Stark in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, blaming a kind of snobbery toward superhero movies.

Downey later won Best Supporting Actor for ‘Oppenheimer’, which makes Bettany’s comment even more pointed. The pair clearly respect each other, so the legacy gag reads as affectionate teasing rather than a real complaint. It also reflects how long both actors have been part of the same universe.

Downey’s Doctor Doom leads the cast of ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘, which is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and arrives in theaters on December 18. He is also set to appear in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. The film’s cast includes Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, the new Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts and many of the original X-Men.

Downey has reportedly been deeply involved in shaping the character. The Russo brothers have said he developed his own backstory for Doom and contributed costume ideas. Downey has also said he returned because he saw an opportunity to redefine the superhero genre.

Bettany isn’t on the announced cast list for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and he has been careful about whether he’ll appear. When asked about it, he joked that people get fired for answering that kind of question and said it was up to Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito. Marvel hasn’t formally confirmed him for ‘Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

He has said he believes he will appear in ‘Secret Wars’, though, and he has also said he will keep playing Vision as long as he’s asked. Vision took part in both ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, so a return would not be out of the question. Speculation has already grown that the end of ‘VisionQuest’ could set up a meeting between Vision and Doom.

‘VisionQuest’ is the last live-action Marvel series before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. It runs for 8 episodes, wrapping up the story that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’. Bettany has described it as feeling like the end of a trilogy while also setting Vision up for Marvel’s next Avengers era.

The series stars James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica and Emily Hampshire, with Terry Matalas serving as showrunner. Its finale on November 10 will show whether Vision’s story points toward a clash with Doom. Until then, Bettany’s joke is a reminder that Marvel’s longest-serving actors are still competing for bragging rights as much as screen time.
