Director Reinaldo Marcus Green Talks Karen Page’s Return in ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’
Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle has brought The Punisher back into the spotlight again, and fans are getting more details about the latest chapter in his story. The information comes from an interview with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, where he talked about the making of The Punisher: One Last Kill and the return of Karen Page.
Frank Castle is currently back in the MCU through several projects. He appeared in Daredevil: Born Again, and although he did not return in its second season, Marvel continued his story through a new special titled The Punisher: One Last Kill, which is now streaming on Disney+. Jon Bernthal is also set to appear in upcoming projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, alongside Tom Holland.
One of the biggest talking points in the new Punisher special is the return of Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green explained that her return was always meant to connect closely to Frank’s emotional state.
He said: “Because we use a sort of unreliable narrator, I think it was a great opportunity to bring back some of the characters that fans love in a way that helps us shape his psychological state, and where we find him in this story. Obviously, anyone who knows Karen knows that she is one of the favorites out of all the characters, and I think that there’s clearly some tension between the two, which everyone loves to see on-screen.”
Green also explained that Karen is not just a side character in Frank’s story, but someone deeply tied to his emotional world. In the special, her presence is used to reflect Frank’s inner thoughts and memories, especially when he is dealing with pain and loss.

He added: “It’s so organic, and it’s so real, and the two actually love each other, and you can see that on-screen just from actor to actor how intense they are when they’re together. So that was amazing to be able to utilize her character to help his headspace. I think she represents his wife in that moment, and it’s such a parallel between him and his real wife and what’s happening in his headspace, and just the connection to another human being.”
According to Green, Karen’s presence in the story is also tied to Frank’s memories of his late wife. In certain moments, the show uses visual and emotional links to show how Frank’s past is still affecting him.
He explained: “You know, she’s wearing the same sweatshirt as she [his wife] was wearing the night that she was [killed]. So I think all of that is important for the connectivity of Jon’s psychological state in the piece, and having Karen Page come back and do that with us was a lot of fun to see on screen and, hopefully, a lot of fun for the fans as well.”
The director also spoke about why only a small number of characters were brought into Frank’s story in this special. He said the focus needed to stay tight because of the short runtime and emotional structure of the story. Characters like Curtis Hoyle and Karen Page were chosen because they best reflected Frank’s mindset.
Green explained that other characters, including Matt Murdock, were not part of the hallucination structure in this project. The story instead stayed focused on a simple emotional direction, centered on Frank’s internal struggle.
He said the team made these choices to keep the story clear and focused, rather than overcrowding it with too many appearances.
The interview also highlights how the relationship between Frank and Karen continues to stand out in the Punisher universe. Their scenes together are often emotional and intense, and Green admitted that their dynamic may have been influenced by earlier versions of the characters.
With The Punisher: One Last Kill now streaming and more appearances planned for Jon Bernthal across upcoming Marvel projects, fans are now waiting to see where Frank Castle’s story goes next and whether Karen Page will continue to be part of it.
