As FBI heads into Season 9, the CBS drama is making a big change for OA. The Season 8 finale ended with OA being fired from the FBI team at 26 Fed, but that is not the end of his story.

In the finale, Maggie, OA, Scola, and Eva worked a dangerous case involving a stolen bioweapon. They were forced to team up with Anna and her strike team after the weapon was released on a bus full of civilians. While the FBI wanted to save the victims, Anna’s group had a different goal. They wanted to keep a serum that could later be reproduced on a larger scale, even if it meant leaving the infected civilians behind.

OA strongly pushed back against orders from ADIC Green, who wanted the team to move on and ignore what happened on the bus. After refusing to back down, OA was fired. The moment shocked the team, especially Maggie.

At the end of the episode, Anna approached OA at a bar and offered him a place on her strike team. After hearing her out, OA secretly called Maggie and Isobel to tell them he was going undercover as part of a plan to take Anna’s group down from the inside.

Speaking to TV Insider, FBI showrunner Mike Weiss confirmed that OA’s new role will not reduce Zeeko Zaki’s screen time in Season 9.

“We’re really excited to see him deep undercover in a different way,” Weiss said.

According to Weiss, only Maggie and Isobel know the truth at the start. The rest of the team believes OA was actually fired. However, that secret will not stay hidden for long.

“I think it’ll be interesting to see a little bit of the fallout of this secret ripple over the course of the first section of Season 9,” Weiss explained.

Weiss also confirmed that ADIC Green has no idea OA is undercover. He said viewers will eventually see Isobel explain the truth to Green, which he teased would be a fun moment.

The finale also focused heavily on Maggie and OA’s emotional goodbye. Even though Maggie knows the mission is fake, Weiss said her reaction was completely real because OA will still disappear for months while undercover.

“She is for real going to be separated from her partner,” Weiss said. “He’s going to be undercover. He’s going to be unreachable.”

The showrunner added that deep undercover work takes a serious emotional toll, something the writers want to explore next season.

Season 9 will also continue OA’s new relationship with Zara. Weiss said the connection between the two characters feels very different from OA’s past relationship with Gemma because Zara understands both the job and OA himself on a deeper level.

“I think she’s going to be able to call him out and also be able to really appreciate who he is,” Weiss said.

The rest of the FBI team will also return next season. Scola will deal with married life and family worries, Eva will try to prove herself as a more experienced agent, Jubal will continue leading the JOC, and Isobel will face pressure from higher-ups in a politically sensitive role.
