‘Practical Magic 2’ Star Maisie Williams Once Hired an ‘Etsy Witch’ in Hopes of Landing a Movie Role, Here’s How It Went

Hollywood superstition runs deeper than most fans realize, with actors turning to all sorts of rituals and good-luck charms to help tip the odds in their favor before big auditions. Few admissions, though, land quite as unexpectedly charming as this one, especially coming from someone now literally playing a witch on screen.

Maisie Williams has built her career on portraying characters with sharp edges and hard-won resilience, from her breakout role in ‘Game of Thrones’ to her latest turn in the highly anticipated ‘Practical Magic 2.‘ But it turns out her own relationship with magic extends well beyond the page and screen.

At the film’s European premiere this week, Williams revealed a surprisingly candid detail about her past attempts to manifest career success. She told British Vogue that she once paid an “Etsy witch” to help her land a role in a movie, following specific instructions the online spellcaster gave her to recite every single night.

Despite her commitment to the nightly ritual, Williams was quick to admit the spell simply didn’t deliver the results she was hoping for. “It didn’t happen!” she quipped, reflecting on the experience with the kind of self-aware humor that’s become part of her charm on the press circuit.

The admission carries an obvious layer of irony given where Williams has landed professionally. In ‘Practical Magic 2,’ she steps into the role of Antonia Owens, one of two grown daughters belonging to Sandra Bullock’s character, taking over a part originally played by child actress Alexandra Artrip in the 1998 original.

Williams joins Joey King, who plays her onscreen sister Kylie Owens, as the sequel’s next generation of witches, continuing the Owens family legacy alongside Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s returning characters. The film, based on a later installment in Alice Hoffman’s book series, also introduces Lee Pace as a love interest for Sally, along with Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod rounding out the new cast additions.

While Williams may remain skeptical about the effectiveness of online spellcasting specifically, she reportedly acknowledged still holding onto certain superstitions of her own, suggesting her relationship with magic and manifestation hasn’t been entirely dismissed despite this particular attempt falling flat.

‘Practical Magic 2’ marks a significant creative reunion, with Susanne Bier directing from a script co-written by Akiva Goldsman, who also worked on the original film, alongside Georgia Pritchett. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are both reprising their roles as the eccentric Owens aunts, giving longtime fans plenty of familiar faces to look forward to alongside the new additions.

The London premiere itself doubled as something of a fashion moment as well, with Williams reportedly turning heads in a custom look inspired by one of Bullock’s own vintage red carpet outfits from decades earlier, adding another layer of connection between the film’s original stars and its newest cast members.

With ‘Practical Magic 2′ set to open exclusively in theaters on September 11, fans will finally get to see whether Williams’ witchy character fares any better with magic than she did in real life. Whether or not an Etsy spell ever works out for her, it’s clear Williams isn’t afraid to poke fun at her own past attempts at manifestation.
