Julianne Moore is stepping into a lighter role with a new Netflix comedy film that also brings her into collaboration with Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, according to information reported from industry sources involved with the project.

The film is currently untitled and is described as a multi-generational comedy in the style of Crazy, Stupid, Love. Julianne Moore will star as a mother whose life takes a chaotic turn when her daughter receives a job promotion that would move her far away

. Instead of accepting the situation, the mother panics and tries to stop it from happening. Her plan leads her into an over-the-top mission to find the perfect romantic partner for her daughter, all in an attempt to keep her close.

The story is built as an ensemble piece, with Moore confirmed as one of the lead roles. Casting is still underway for the remaining three main characters, suggesting the project will focus on several interconnected storylines rather than a single lead perspective.

The screenplay is written by Maggie Sheridan, who previously worked as an executive story editor on the third season of Loot, the Apple TV+ comedy starring Maya Rudolph. The film is being produced by Higher Ground, the company founded by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, which has an ongoing first-look deal with Netflix. Anikah McLaren is producing alongside Julianne Moore, who is also attached as an executive producer. The project continues the Obamas’ expanding partnership with Netflix, which includes upcoming titles such as All the Sinners Bleed and The Altruists.

According to Netflix’s recent development slate, the streaming platform has been actively investing in high-concept romantic comedies. Other projects in the pipeline include a culture-clash romance involving Blackpink’s Lisa, a body-swap comedy in the spirit of 13 Going on 30 starring Emily Bader, and a Berlanti/Schechter project described as a mix of Legally Blonde and War of the Roses.

Julianne Moore’s recent work has leaned heavily into dramatic and critically acclaimed roles, including May December, The Room Next Door, and Echo Valley. This new Netflix comedy marks a noticeable shift in tone for the actress as she moves into more comedic territory while continuing her work as a producer.
