Peter Jackson Teases New Tolkien Adaptations: Talks Underway for More ‘Lord of the Rings’ Projects
Filmmaker Peter Jackson has said he is in early talks to adapt more works from author J.R.R. Tolkien, including the major fantasy text The Silmarillion. The discussions involve Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate, with the goal of bringing more of Tolkien’s world to the big screen.
Jackson is already known for shaping modern fantasy cinema. He directed The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King between 2001 and 2003. He later returned for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and its two sequels. These films remain the most direct and well-known adaptations of Tolkien’s novels.
In his recent comments, Jackson explained that new conversations are happening because of changes inside the Tolkien estate. He suggested that the newer generation managing the estate may be more open to licensing material that was previously off limits.
He said, “Christopher Tolkien edited and published other (J.R.R. Tolkien) books – The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales – I mean there’s a lot more Tolkien writing that would actually make great movies that were subsequently edited and released by Christopher.”
He also explained that, for many years, these works were not available for adaptation. According to him, that situation may now be changing. He said, “But Christopher passed away recently, well, I suppose two or three years ago now, and the younger Tolkiens, this next generation, are now running the estate. They’re much more open to talking.”
One of the key works being discussed is The Silmarillion. This book is very different from The Lord of the Rings. It is not a single story with a clear beginning and end. Instead, it is a collection of myths, legends, and histories that explain the creation of Tolkien’s world, called Middle-earth.
The Silmarillion was published after Tolkien’s death in 1977 and was edited by his son Christopher Tolkien. It covers a long timeline, starting from the creation of the world and going through ancient wars between gods, elves, and dark forces. It includes stories about powerful jewels called the Silmarils, which are central to many conflicts in the early history of Middle-earth.
Because of its structure, the book is more like a mythology than a traditional novel. It includes multiple stories that are connected but not always told in a simple linear way. This makes it difficult to adapt into a single film or even a standard trilogy. Many fans believe it would require a large series or multiple projects to fully capture its scale.
Jackson also said that the goal would be to move beyond material already used in previous films, especially the appendices from the original books. He said, “It would be nice to get away from the appendices and get something a bit more meaty.”
At the moment, more Tolkien projects are already in development. One of them is a prequel film titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis. Another project, reportedly titled The Shadow of the Past, is also in early development and is expected to explore material from the original story world in a new way.
For now, the talks between Jackson, Warner Bros., and the Tolkien estate are still ongoing. No official production of The Silmarillion has been confirmed yet, but the possibility of adapting it has reopened interest in expanding Tolkien’s universe on screen.
