Warhorse Studiosm, Behind ‘Kingdom Come’ Franchise Is Forging an Open-World The Lord of the Rings RPG — and It Could Be the Most Immersive Middle-earth Game Yet
Warhorse Studios has officially confirmed that it is working on two new games, including an open-world RPG set in Middle-earth.
The studio shared the news on social media, where it posted: “You might have heard the rumours, it’s time to reveal what we are working on. 🗺️ An open world Middle-earth RPG. ⚔️ A new Kingdom Come adventure. We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right.”
Warhorse Studios is best known for the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, especially the recently released Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. While the studio did not share many details, it confirmed that a new game connected to the Kingdom Come world is now in development.
At the moment, it is unclear if the project is actually Kingdom Come: Deliverance III or something different. The announcement only called it “a new Kingdom Come adventure,” so fans will have to wait for more information.
The bigger surprise was the confirmation of an open-world RPG based on The Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth. Rumors about the game started earlier this year after a translator reportedly mentioned the project during an appearance on Tolkien Polska, a Polish podcast focused on Tolkien’s work.
Back in October 2025, Insider Gaming also reported that a new Lord of the Rings game was in development. At the time, the report claimed the game would be a third-person action RPG inspired by the style and scale of Hogwarts Legacy. The same report said the project could receive funding support from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, with a budget reportedly close to $100 million.
Fans of Middle-earth have been asking for a large modern RPG set in Tolkien’s world for years, so the announcement has already created a lot of excitement online. Since Warhorse Studios said it will reveal more details “when the time is right,” it seems unlikely that either game will launch in 2026.
For now, fans can only wait and hope that trailers or gameplay footage arrive sometime later this year.
