‘Marshals’ Season 1 Cliffhanger Explained as Yellowstone Spinoff Star Teases Two Characters’ Fates
The season 1 finale of Marshals has left viewers with a major cliffhanger, and now one of its stars has addressed what happened and what it could mean going forward.
The ending of the season builds tension around a dangerous ambush. In the final moments, Cal and Belle move in to question Jeb, a ranch hand connected to a nearby property owner. However, just before they reach him, Cal notices something suspicious. Jeb is seen driving away, and two shooters appear behind the vehicle. The episode then cuts away as gunfire is opened on Cal and Belle, leaving their fate unknown.
This cliffhanger quickly became the biggest talking point of the season. It leaves the audience unsure if both characters survived or if one or both were seriously injured. The show does not give any answers before the credits roll, which adds to the suspense heading into a potential second season.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Logan Marshall-Green explained that there were no detailed discussions about what would happen after the cliffhanger while filming the finale. He said the focus was simply on completing the first season and letting the story unfold naturally. He added, “Finish season 1 and let what happens happen,” while also saying he hoped to continue the story if a second season is approved.
He also admitted that the situation Cal and Belle are in is clearly dangerous and unlikely to end cleanly. He said that given the intensity of the ambush, “there’s no way” both characters would walk away without consequences. He hinted that whatever happens next will not be easy for either of them.
Marshall-Green also reflected on Cal’s emotional journey throughout the season. He explained that Cal’s main motivation is not just his job as a Marshal, but his personal life, especially his relationship with his daughter. He described Cal as someone trying to rebuild broken connections rather than just focusing on law enforcement.
Another important storyline this season is the growing relationship between Cal and Belle, played by Arielle Kebbel. Marshall-Green said their connection felt natural and earned over time. He explained, “It just felt earned, and it wasn’t just some secondary romance to change energy.” He also said both characters bring emotional depth to each other, even though they each carry their own personal struggles.

The actor also spoke about the physical demands of the show. While he has experience with action scenes and riding horses, he said one of the hardest challenges was portraying illness during filming. He explained that certain scenes required him to act through physical weakness even when conditions on set were not extreme.
At this point, the future of Marshals is still unclear, but production for a second season is already being discussed. The first season’s ending suggests that the story will continue to explore consequences from the ambush and the wider conflict surrounding the Weaver ranch storyline.
With its mix of personal drama and action, the show continues to expand the wider Yellowstone universe while leaving key questions unanswered. For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation on whether Cal and Belle survive and what their next chapter will look like.
