‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off Starring Matthew McConaughey Gets Major New Update After Years of Silence

The long-awaited spin-off series connected to Yellowstone and starring Matthew McConaughey is still not officially dead, according to new comments from actor Cole Hauser. The update comes from an interview Hauser gave to The Playlist, where he addressed ongoing fan speculation about the project.

McConaughey was previously linked to a modern-day expansion of the Yellowstone universe. At one point, early reports suggested the project might involve Hauser as well, but the idea never moved forward in that form. Since then, there has been confusion among fans about whether different spin-offs were connected or developed from the same concept.

Hauser cleared up some of that speculation in the interview. He explained that the project he worked on, which later became Dutton Ranch, was separate from the McConaughey spin-off idea. He said, “No. Dutton was a one-off to its own,” making it clear the two were different developments.

He also talked about his relationship with McConaughey and how they discussed ideas over the years, but not as part of the same project. He said, “I know what you’re talking about. I’m friends with Matthew, so we had a little dialogue along the way years ago, but it had nothing to do with that.”

According to Hauser, the goal of his own project was to explore new versions of familiar characters in the Yellowstone universe, but with a different creative direction. His comments suggest that McConaughey’s spin-off concept was always being developed separately, even if both ideas existed around the same time.

While the McConaughey-led series has not officially moved forward, it has not been fully ruled out either. Industry reports and past announcements linked the actor to a possible continuation or expansion of the franchise, but no final production decision has been confirmed.

In the meantime, Hauser is also working with McConaughey on a different project called Arena, created by writer Nic Pizzolatto. The series will follow two brothers who coach college sports, marking a shift away from the Western setting of Yellowstone.

McConaughey also has other upcoming film projects outside the franchise, showing he remains active across different genres. Still, fans of Yellowstone continue to watch closely for any updates about his possible return to the universe.

For now, the spin-off remains in a state of uncertainty, with no official cancellation or production start announced.
