‘Hacks’ Creators Say They Want a DVD Release to Make Sure the Show ‘Stays in Existence’”
The creators of Hacks are talking about a possible physical media release as they look for ways to keep the show accessible in the long term. The discussion comes from an interview with Deadline, where Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky spoke about the future of the series and the changing state of Hollywood.
The team said they are interested in releasing a full DVD box set after the show’s final season wraps. They explained that the idea comes from growing concerns about streaming platforms and how quickly content can disappear due to corporate changes, mergers, and licensing decisions. In the interview, Aniello pointed out how unpredictable the situation has become for fans who want to revisit their favorite shows.
She said, “It’s such an important time for people to invest in physical media because you’re right, things are coming down all the time and it’s like, ‘Oh, I love that movie, I want to see it.’ You just can’t, babe, it doesn’t exist.”
Aniello added that the issue goes beyond convenience and starts to touch on control over creative work. She said decisions about what stays available can depend on algorithms or business changes rather than audience demand. She also warned that this could become a larger problem as companies continue to merge and consolidate.
She said, “That does really put so much power of the distribution of art in the hands of algorithms and people’s whims and certain executives not liking somebody’s brother, so they take down their movie or show or whatever. It is really scary, the idea of censorship, especially as more and more companies are bought up by other companies.”
The creators also said they would like the DVD box set to include extra content such as deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes material. Their goal is to give fans something permanent that does not rely on streaming platforms staying active or keeping titles available.
Aniello made it clear that the plan is still not officially confirmed. She said they are trying to make it happen but do not yet know if it will move forward. Even so, she emphasized how important it feels to preserve the show in a physical format.

She said, “We’re really hoping to make a Hacks DVD box set, for one. We’re trying to make that happen. That’s an exclusive. Please go buy it, not because we make any money off of it. We just want to make sure the show stays in existence for as long as DVD players exist.”
She also admitted that the situation around streaming and media ownership feels uncertain and even discouraging at times. Still, she suggested that community support from fans could help keep interest in physical releases alive.
Hacks, which premiered in 2021, follows the complicated professional relationship between stand-up comedian Deborah Vance and young comedy writer Ava Daniels. The series has received strong critical praise and multiple awards over its run, becoming one of the standout comedy dramas on HBO Max.
The show recently entered its final season, making discussions about its long-term preservation even more relevant for its creators and audience.
