Big Time Jump Coming in ‘Sheriff Country’ Season 2, Boss Reveals After Finale Twist
A major update about Sheriff Country has come from showrunner Matt Lopez, who confirmed that season 2 will not pick up right where the first season ended. Instead, the show will include a time jump before returning to the fallout of the season 1 finale twist.
The information comes from an interview Lopez gave to Soaps.com, where he talked about the creative direction for the new season. His comments focus on how the story will move forward after the shocking ending of episode 20, which left fans with several big questions.
At the end of season 1, the show delivered a major revelation. Wes, played by William Earl Brown, tells Mickey, played by Morena Baccarin, that her real mother is DEA agent Eva Santos, played by Rachel Ticotin. The moment was emotional and ended the season on a dramatic note that fans did not see coming.
Because of that cliffhanger, many viewers expected season 2 to continue immediately from that exact moment. But Lopez explained that the writers decided to take a different approach.
“The way that scene ended with, like, ‘Mickey, this is your mother,’ it almost begs to be a direct pickup, and for that reason, I was like, ‘Let’s not do a direct pickup. Let’s surprise people,’” Lopez said.
Instead of continuing right away, the new season will start after some time has passed in the story. Lopez said this time jump is important because it allows the show to explore what happened off-screen while also creating new tension for the characters.
He added that part of the storytelling will involve slowly filling in the gap between seasons. This means viewers will not immediately see how the characters reacted to the finale twist. Instead, the show will reveal those details over time.
“I think there’s a really cool, rewarding little bit of a time jump, and then after the time jump, we’ll fill in what happened between the last frame of the last episode of Season 1 and the first frame of the first episode of Season 2,” he explained. “And that also is kind of delicious and fun because there’s some surprises there.”
Lopez also spoke about what fans can expect from the characters going forward. He said Mickey’s role as sheriff will continue to be very difficult. Her decisions from season 1 will carry over into season 2 and create more pressure in both her personal and professional life.
According to Lopez, this pressure will affect not only Mickey but also the people around her, including Boone, Cassidy, and Wes. The showrunner said these relationships will face new challenges as the story continues.

He explained that the public image of Mickey as sheriff will also start to change. While she has had strong support in her community, that support will not stay steady. Season 2 will explore how quickly things can shift when new problems appear.
While CBS has officially renewed the series, there is still no confirmed release date for season 2. The production timeline has not been fully shared yet, but the show’s creative team is already planning the next chapter.
Season 1 of Sheriff Country ended with several storylines coming together in a high-stakes finale titled “Mexico.” The episode focused heavily on a criminal case involving Alec, who was revealed to be working as Miranda’s secret fixer. Mickey and Boone worked together to expose him through a sting operation, which ended in a dangerous confrontation at an airfield.
The situation escalated quickly when Alec realized he had been tricked. A shootout followed, and Boone was injured in the chaos. He survived, but the event left emotional consequences for Mickey and the rest of the team.
The finale also included several personal storylines. Boone’s romantic tension with Mickey continued, but new possibilities began to form with another character, Emmy from the morgue. At the same time, other relationships in the group started shifting, setting up future drama for season 2.
One of the biggest final twists involved Director Santos. After the main conflict was resolved, Wes was told he would need to work undercover with a new cartel case. Mickey was forced to accept the situation after being pressured with threats that could damage her career.
But the biggest shock came at the very end. Wes recognized Santos and revealed that she is actually Mickey’s mother, Maria, who was believed to be dead. This final moment completely changed the direction of the story and set up the major emotional conflict for the next season.
With all of these developments in place, the time jump now adds another layer to the story. Instead of showing events right away, the show will move forward and reveal answers later, leaving fans to piece together what happened during the missing period.
For now, viewers are left waiting for season 2, knowing that the next chapter of Sheriff Country will not only continue the story but also reshape how the finale is understood.
