This week’s Netflix numbers, based on global streaming data for the week ending May 24th, show a mix of surprises, disappointments, and slow starts. The information comes from Netflix viewing charts and performance tracking across new and returning titles worldwide.

All eyes were on a few major new releases, especially “The Boroughs,” the latest sci-fi series from The Duffer Brothers, but the early results were not as strong as many expected. At the same time, other new shows like “Ladies First” also struggled to make a big impact in their opening days.

“The Boroughs,” the new sci-fi series from The Duffer Brothers, is off to a slow start after debuting on a Thursday.

Even though it has recently managed to pass “Berlin Season 2” in the global rankings, its overall performance is still weak. The show has recorded about 35.3 million hours watched and 5.6 million views, which places it low in the charts and far from a breakout hit.

The report also points out that the creators already have plans for multiple seasons, with season 2 already in early development. However, the series may need stronger audience performance, especially better completion rates and longer viewing engagement, if it wants to secure those future seasons.

“The Boroughs,” a new sci-fi drama created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by Netflix. It premiered on May 21st, and was expected to be one of the platform’s stronger genre launches of the year.

Instead, the series opened with lower-than-expected numbers. While it did manage to climb past a few competing titles, it is still far from a major hit in its opening week.

The show takes place in a quiet retirement community where residents discover a strange and dangerous force. The official description says, “In a seemingly picturesque retirement community, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.”

The cast includes Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Geena Davis. Even with strong names and decent critical reception, early audience numbers have not matched expectations.

Another new title, the rom-com “Ladies First,” also had a quiet debut and did not manage to break into the top tier of the charts. It landed a modest opening without much global traction.

Meanwhile, the animated series “Mating Season,” from the creators behind Big Mouth, also failed to perform strongly, missing the top 10 entirely and recording just under 2.1 million views.

Several other releases, including the UK documentary “Liverpool’s Miracle of Istanbul” and the Argentine series “Carizzma,” also did not make the weekly rankings.

One long-running standout, “KPop Demon Hunters,” may finally be nearing the end of its historic run. The show has spent close to 52 weeks in the global top 10, but current trends suggest it could drop out soon after an unusually long streak.

Taken together, this week paints a clear picture of a platform where new releases are struggling to break through, while established hits continue to dominate the space.
