Mattea Conforti, who plays Becka in Hulu’s The Testaments, recently spoke about her character’s intense journey and the shocking choices she makes in the Season 1 finale. The series is based on characters from the world created by Margaret Atwood, and it is developed for Hulu with Bruce Miller involved in the production team.

In the final episodes of Season 1, Becka’s story takes a very dark turn. She learns that her father, Dr. Grove (Randal Edwards), has been sexually assaulting girls at her school. The situation becomes even more painful when she finds out that her best friend Agnes (Chase Infiniti), who she also has deep romantic feelings for, was one of his victims. This pushes Becka into a breaking point.

In a moment of extreme emotion, Becka kills her father while he is in the bathtub at home. The act is sudden and violent, and it changes everything for her. Afterward, she tells Agnes what she has done, but this leads to more trouble. Agnes tries to help her, but the situation spirals, and Becka is eventually taken by the authorities.

Even though Becka commits the crime, the consequences do not stop there. Her mother, Paula (Amy Seimetz), steps in and takes the blame for what happened. At the same time, Becka is forced into a marriage with Garth (Brad Alexander), a man Agnes is in love with. The ending leaves Becka trapped in a life she never wanted, surrounded by loss and control from others.

Speaking to Deadline, Mattea Conforti explained how she approached such a difficult storyline and what she believes drives Becka’s actions. She said that understanding Becka’s emotional state was key to playing the role. She shared, “That really helps me get it, because it’s such a specific mindset that I have to be in.” She also said that the character’s feelings build naturally over the season as the story develops.

Conforti also spoke about Becka’s love for Agnes and how it affects her decisions. She believes that Becka’s connection to Agnes is what pushes her over the edge. As she put it, “She is a woman whom she cares so deeply about, platonically and romantically.” In her view, Becka believes she is acting out of justice, even though her actions are extreme.

The actress also reflected on the emotional weight of the finale, especially the impact on Becka’s family. She talked about the scene where Becka’s mother sacrifices herself to protect her daughter. Conforti said it was a very emotional moment to film and highlighted how strong the mother’s love is, even in a world filled with cruelty and control.

When discussing Becka’s future, Conforti described her as someone who is deeply lost after everything that happens. She said Becka feels trapped and confused, especially after being forced into marriage. In her words, Becka ends up becoming what she never wanted to be, and she is left struggling with loneliness and sadness.

The interview comes from Deadline, which spoke with Conforti following the Season 1 finale of The Testaments. The series has not yet confirmed how Becka’s story will continue, but Conforti hopes the character will eventually find strength and independence in future episodes.
