The first reactions to Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi movie Disclosure Day are finally here, and the response has been extremely positive.

Critics and journalists who attended early screenings are already calling the film one of Spielberg’s strongest movies in years. According to the first social media reactions, the movie mixes mystery, emotion, suspense, and classic sci-fi ideas in a way that feels fresh while still carrying Spielberg’s signature style.

Disclosure Day stars Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor and follows a story centered around alien life, government secrets, and what could happen if humanity finally learned we are not alone in the universe.

Collider editor Steven Weintraub praised the movie and especially highlighted Emily Blunt’s performance. He wrote, “In a shock to absolutely no one, Steven Spielberg has delivered another towering home run with Disclosure Day.” He also encouraged audiences to avoid trailers and spoilers before watching the film.

Slashfilm critic Bill Bria described the movie as something very different for Spielberg. He said, “Disclosure Day is the weirdest movie Spielberg’s ever made (complimentary).” He also praised the screenplay by David Koepp and called John Williams’ music score his best work in years.

IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill compared the movie to some of Spielberg’s most famous classics. He wrote, “Disclosure Day is top tier Spielberg, as exhilarating as Raiders but with the emotional texture & increased ambition of his post-9/11 work.”

Gizmodo critic Germain Lussier called the film Spielberg’s best movie in two decades. In his reaction, he said, “It’s Spielberg’s best film in 20 years, filled w/ all the magic that makes his films so special.” He also praised Emily Blunt’s performance and described it as unforgettable.

Freelance critic Tessa Smith also shared a very emotional response after seeing the movie. She wrote, “Disclosure Day is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Truly something special.” Smith added that the movie’s mystery and emotional ending stayed with her long after the screening ended.

The movie marks Spielberg’s first feature film since The Fabelmans, which was released in 2022. Alongside Blunt and O’Connor, the cast includes Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell.

Disclosure Day was directed by Spielberg from a screenplay written by David Koepp. The story is based on an idea created by Spielberg himself. Reports about the project first appeared in 2024 when it was revealed that Spielberg was developing a new UFO-related film.

Fans have already started comparing the movie to Spielberg’s classic 1977 sci-fi film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. During an interview with Empire magazine, Emily Blunt hinted there could be connections between the two stories. She said, “There are definitely questions posed by Close Encounters that are answered in Disclosure Day.”

Spielberg has also openly talked about his fascination with alien life while promoting the film. During an appearance at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival earlier this year, he said, “I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now — and I made a movie about that.”

The story of Disclosure Day follows a whistleblower trying to expose a hidden conspiracy tied to alien contact before a major event changes human history forever.

Universal Pictures will release Disclosure Day in theaters across the United States on June 12.
